Women's Lacrosse wins 14-11 at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – RIT senior Midfielder Grace Validzic tallied three goals and an assist to lead the Tigers 14-11 win at Vassar in the Liberty League action, Friday.
 
Senior midfielder Adele Jones and senior attack Zoe Heffernan each scored three goals and senior midfielder Kate Trojan tallied two goals.
 
Senior attack Milena Stephen won five draw controls, while Jones won three draws. Validzic, Trojan and first year defender Sophia Wilhelm each caused two turnovers. First year defender Melia Wittlinger had three ground balls. Senior goalie Ellie Ruddy made seven saves in net for the Tigers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Validzic scored with 10:27 remaining in the first quarter to give RIT a 1-0 lead.
  • Heffernan tallied a women-up goal and junior attack Emma Ripley scored with 52 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to extend the Tiger's lead to 3-0.
  • Validzic scored her second goal of the first half early in the second quarter to give RIT a 4-0 lead.
  • Karina Gyllenhaal scored to cut the Tiger's lead to 4-1.
  • RIT ran off four straight goals to lead 8-1 at halftime.
  • Senior midfielder Eliza Barton, Trojan, Nichter and Jones (woman-up) each scored to give the Tigers a four-goal lead.
  • Ruddy made four saves allowing one goal in the opening half.
  • Jones scored back-to-back goals early in the third quarter to extend RIT's lead to 10-1.
  • Heffernan scored midway through the third to give the Tigers an 11-1 lead.
  • Vassar's Liz Lange scored to cut RIT's lead to 11-2 before Heffernan scored her third goal of the game to give the Tigers a 12-2 lead.
  • Amelia Poirier and Kate Connolly tallied back-to-back goals at the end of the third to cut RIT's lead to 12-4.
  • Tess Billings scored three straight goals early in the fourth quarter to cut the Tigers lead to 12-7.
  • Validzic scored her third goal of the game 7:39 remaining in the game to give RIT a 13-7 lead.
  • Sigrid Fredlund cut RIT's lead to 13-8 on her goal with 5:59 remaining and Trojan tallied her second goal of the game that extended the Tigers lead to 14-8.
  • Trojan scored to give RIT a 14-8 lead.
  • Elizabeth Burgess scored twice and Siena Wong scored in a three-goal Vassar spurt at the end of the quarter to make it 14-11 final.
 
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Vassar, 30-23.
  • The Tigers won 15-of-26 draws and 19-of-22 on clears.
  • RIT had 11 ground balls and caused nine turnovers.
