No. 13 Men's Lacrosse rolls past No. 15 Washington & Lee 22-13 at Mustang Classic

OWINGS MILLS, MD – RIT junior attack Erich Acton scored four goals and added three assists to lead the No. 13 Tigers to a 22-13 win over No. 15 Washington & Lee at the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic, Saturday.
 
Sophomore attack Ryan Sanders scored two goals and added three assists and junior midfielder David Charney scored three goals and four points. First-year attack Brayden Kuczma recorded a career-high two goals and two assists and senior attack Ethan Harkins and sophomore midfielder Turner Anderson each scored two goals.
 
Junior defenseman Joe Holenstein had six ground balls, one caused two turnover and he scored a goal. Graduate student defenseman Jamie Hunt and junior midfielder Paulie Weinrich each caused two turnovers and first-year Philip Minardo won 20-of-28 faceoffs, had 14 ground balls and scored a goal. Senior goalie Alex Zborowski made 10 saves in net.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Acton scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Ryan Bullock early in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Generals scored back-to-back goals, taking a 2-1 lead on Maz Fertels' goal early in the quarter.
  • James Haley tied the game at 5-5 on his goal with 6:16 to play in the opening frame.
  • RIT ran off two straight goals, taking a 7-5 lead on sophomore midfielder James Corry's goal with 1:10 to play in the first quarter.
  • Fertels scored early in the second quarter that cut RIT's lead to 7-6.
  • Anderson gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead on his goal with 11:33 to play in the half.
  • Washington & Lee scored two straight goals, tying the score 8-8 on Garrett Ferguson's goal midway through the quarter.
  • RIT answered with three straight goals. Junior defender Joe Holenstein scored, Charney scored off an assist from Sanders and Sanders scored with 1:33 to play to increase RIT's lead to 11-8 at halftime.
  • RIT outscored Washington & Lee 8-2 in the third quarter, including a five-goal run to finish the frame.
  • Harkins scored twice in the five-goal run while Ewen Patrick, Minardo, Tyson Allison and Kuczma each scored to give the Tigers a 19-10 lead.
  • Luke Cladwell scored early in the fourth quarter before Acton scored with 12:50 to play to give the Tigers a 20-11 lead.
  • Nick DiLauro scored off an assist from Charney, and first-year midfielder Charlie Iannone scored with two minutes remaining to make it a 22-13 final.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Washington & Lee 62-36, including 39 on target.
  • The Tigers went 20-of-24 on clearing attempts and 1-for-2 on man-up.
  • RIT won 21-of-38 faceoffs and had 45 ground balls.
