Softball defeats Brooklyn College, 7-1; falls to Geneva (Pa.), 7-2, in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The RIT Softball Team defeated Brooklyn College, 7-1, after starting with a 7-2 setback to Geneva (Pa.), Friday, on the final day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic.
 
BROOKLYN COLLEGE 7, RIT 1
  • RIT first-year Taryn Jones finished 2-for-3 with her first career home run, three runs scored and three RBI while sophomore Carlianna Ewing was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Jones drew a lead-off walk in the third and came around on a double to right center by first-year Madison Passineau for the game's first run.
  • The Tigers took a 5-0 lead with four runs in the fourth. With runners on first and second, Ewing knocked an RBI single before Jones later cleared the bases with a three-run shot down the left field line.
  • RIT scored two more runs in the sixth. Ewing came home from third on a bases-loaded passed ball before Jones came around from second on an error by the Brooklyn catcher.
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Blair earned the complete game victory, only allowing one run in the bottom of the sixth on two of the four total hits she allowed, while striking out a career-high 11 batters.   
GENEVA (PA.) 7, RIT 2
  • Sophomore Kate Carlone went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in the first inning, but Geneva responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to start a run of seven unanswered the rest of the way, holding the Tigers to four total hits.
  • Sophomore Anna Cavotta went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Senior starter Jessica Majot took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out three in 3.1 innings of work. 
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT is scheduled to return home with two doubleheaders next week, hosting St. John Fisher on Tuesday (Mar. 24) and Brockport on Thursday (Mar. 26). Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. starts.
