Softball takes down Pitt-Bradford, 6-1; falls to Westfield St., 7-3

NAPLES, Fla. – The RIT Softball Team defeated Pitt-Bradford, 6-1, to bounce back from a 7-3 setback to Westfield State, Thursday, on the fourth day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic.
 
RIT 6, PITT-BRADFORD 1
  • Sophomore Anna Cavotta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI while sophomore Kate Carlone ended 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Blair threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out three while only walking one.
  • First-year Taryn Jones brought home Cavotta with an RBI groundout in the first inning, RIT made it a 3-0 game in the second, scoring a run on a Bradford fielding error and an RBI groundout by Cavotta.
  • Cavotta later knocked a two-out RBI in the fourth inning for a 4-0 Tiger lead.
  • Sophomore Kate Carlone hit a one-out double in the fifth and eventually came around on a RBI single by first-year Paige Stein for a 5-0 lead.
  • Bradford brought an unearned run across in the top of the sixth, but the Tigers answered in the bottom of the inning on a two-out double by Carlone that plated Cavotta. 
WESTFIELD STATE 7, RIT 3
  • Carlone went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI during a three-run first inning, but Westfield scored seven unanswered runs the rest of the way to earn the win.
  • Cavotta led off the game with a single to left and stole second before coming around on a single by Jones. Carlone plated Jones with a triple to centerfield before coming home on a single by Stein.
  • The Owls rebounded with three runs in the bottom of the first, and then scored three more in the second and another in the third to put the game out of reach.
  • Sophomore Addison Hill took her first loss of the season, allowing four earned runs, three walks and three hits in 1.1 innings. Senior Jessica Majot allowed four runs and four hits while striking out three over the final 4.2 innings in relief. 
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT is scheduled to take on Geneva (Pa.) at 9:00 a.m. and Brooklyn College at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (Mar.13) at Lee Health Sports Complex to close out play at the Gene Cusic Classic.
