Women’s Basketball visits Union Sunday in Liberty League Tournament title game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's basketball team takes on top-seeded Union in the Liberty League Tournament championship game tomorrow (Mar. 1) in Schenectady with  an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament on the line.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
  • The No. 2-seeded Tigers topped No. 6-seeded Skidmore in the semifinals on Friday, 53-45.
  • Union defeated No. 4-seeded St. Lawrence in the other semifinal on Friday, 79-68.
 
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Garnet Chargers have had RIT's number this season as Union swept the series with a 69-60 road win in Rochester on Jan. 3 before earning a 64-57 win on Jan. 13 in Schenectady. The two losses are the Tigers' lone Liberty League setbacks this season.
  • Despite the two losses, RIT holds an all-time record of 21-18 against Union.
  • In the postseason, the Tigers are 1-1 against Union. In the 2022 tournament, the Garnet Chargers defeated RIT, 54-40, in a first-round meeting.  In the 2016 tournament, RIT won in the semifinals, 68-64.
 SEASON STATS
  • The Tigers rank 22nd in Division III in scoring defense as the team holds its opponents to 51.5 points per game.
  • Heading into Sunday's championship game, RIT is riding a program-record 13-win streak.
  • After going 5-of-10 from beyond the arc on Friday, sophomore guard Caroline Henderson now ranks eighth in the nation with 77 made three-pointers. Henderson previously set a program record with 72 three-pointers last season.
  • Henderson is averaging 11.8 points per game while junior guard Maddy Ramsgard is right behind with 11.7 points per game this season for the Tigers.
  • Jelena Perovic leads Union in scoring this season, averaging 13.7 points per contest, which is second-best in the Liberty League.
 
ON THE LINE
  • The winner of the game earns an automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.
  • The Tigers are in search of their second Liberty League Tournament title and their first since the 2016-17 season.
  • Union is also in search of its second conference title, having won the first-ever Liberty League Tournament in 2003-04.
