Women's Hockey wins 3-2 in OT at No. 4 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – RIT first year forward Cassie Barnes scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 win over No. 4 Penn State.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore goalie Brenna McNamara made eight saves in a scoreless first period.
  • Barnes fired a shot on net in the opening frame.
  • Maddy Christian gave Penn State a 1-0 lead on her goal 3:42 into the second period.
  • Sophomore defender Madison Buziak scored at 7:35 of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Sophomore forward Ireland Stein scored a power play goal at 11:12 of the second to give RIT a 2-1 lead. She poked in a loose puck on a scrum in front of the Penn State goal for her ninth goal of the season.
  • Katelyn Roberts scored at 19:12 of the second period that tied the game at 2-2.
  • McNamara made 10 saves in a scoreless third period, including one against Abby Stonehouse with 1:29 remaining in regulation. Stonehouse broke in 1-on-1 and fired a wrist shot that McNamara caught to keep the game tied.
  • Barnes scored the game-winner 3:42 into overtime. She skated with the puck at the boards to the far face-off dot and fired a wrist into the corner that beat Penn State goalie Katie DeSa.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • Penn State outshot RIT, 36-28.
  • RIT went 1-for-2 on the power play, while Penn State went 0-for-2
  • First year forward Tilli Keranen had two assists.
  • McNamara finished with 34 saves.
  • It is RIT's first win at Penn State since Feb. 1, 2014 (3-1)

RIT returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 14) at No. 4 Penn State at 2:00 p.m.
