No. 3 Men's Lacrosse wins 22-8 at No. 14 Denison in season opener

GRANVILLE, OH – RIT junior attack Clifford Gaston tallied seven points on five goals and two assists to lead the No. 3 Tigers to a 22-8 win over No. 14 Denison in Saturday's season opener.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Denison's Jack Chace scored early in the first quarter to give Denison the lead.
  • Graduate student attack Luke Pilcher scored two of the Tigers seven straight goals to end the period. He scored off an assist from senior midfielder Ian Dinga to give RIT a 4-1 lead and again with 4:32 remaining to extend the Tiger's lead to 6-1.
  • Dinga scored a goal and added an assist in the run, while senior midfielder Michael Finneran, senior defenseman Michael Grace, graduate student attack Jake Erickson and senior midfielder Dylan Bruno also scored in the quarter.
  • RIT outscored Denison 6-1 in the second quarter. To lead 13-2 at the intermission. Erickson had a goal and an assist in the quarter, while Gaston scored two goals including a man-up goal with 7:14 remaining.
  • Gaston and Pilcher each scored twice in the third quarter as RIT extended its lead to 30-5. Pilcher scored a man-up goal from Gaston with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter to give RIT a 20-4 lead.
  • Sophomore midfielder Chase Bruno scored, and senior defenseman Trent Jackson scored his first collegiate goal in the fourth quarter for the Tigers
 
GAME NOTES:
  • RIT outshot Denison, 51-43.
  • The Tigers went 5-of-8 on man-up and 22-of-26 on clearing attempts.
  • Sophomore goalie Alex Zborowski made 14 saves to pick up his first collegiate win.
  • Pilcher scored four goals, Erickson tallied three goals and had two assist and senior midfielder Seth Grottenthaler and junior attack Ethan Harkins each scored two goals.
  • Pilcher recorded his 200th career point. He is the 12th player in program history to reach the 200-point plateau.
  • Graduate student face-off specialist Allyn French won 13-of-22 face-offs and had nine ground balls.

RIT returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 24) against Grove City at 12:00 p.m.
