Women's Hockey hosts No. 7 Colgate this weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT women's hockey team hosts No. 7 Colgate for a pair of non-conference games on Friday and Saturday, October 11-12.

Weekend Recap (RIT at Union)
RIT split a pair of non-conference games at Union, losing 4-0 on Friday before a 4-3 overtime win the following day. Junior goalie Sophia Bellina made 34 saves in Friday's loss.
 
Sophomore forward Addie Alvarez scored 30 seconds into overtime in Saturday's 4-3 win. Sophomore defensewoman Emma Pickering had a goal and an assist and senior forward Kylie Aquaro and graduate student Nicole Ness each scored a goal. Senior goalie Sarah Coe made 26 saves in net to improve to 2-0-0 on the season.
 
Milestones
Aquaro (17g, 36a, 53p) is two points shy of 50th on RIT's all-time scoring list, while Coe is third all-time with 69 appearances in net.
 
Senior defensewoman Bailey Kehl needs four blocks to reach 150 for her career, while senior defensewoman Kyla Bear is two blocks short of 170. Senior forward Athena Vasdani is four points (14g, 22a, 36p) shy of 40 for her career. Bear needs two assists for 30, while Aquaro and Ness are three goals shy of 20.
 
Kehl and senior forward/defensewoman Bronwyn Khangsar each tied their career-high for points and assists (1a, 1p) in a game in Saturday's overtime win at Union. Pickering tied her career-high tallying two points (1g, 1a) in Saturday's win, while Bellina's 34 saves on Friday is the third-most in her career.
 
Century Mark
Six Tigers have surpassed the 100 games plateau. Graduate students Mia Tsilemos (117) and Nicole Ness (112), senior forward Megan McCormick (104), Kehl and Vasdani (103) and Bear (102). Aquaro is three games shy of reaching 100 for her career.
 
About RIT
RIT enters the weekend averaging 3.0 goals per game while allowing 1.8 goals per contest. The Tigers are 3-for-14 (21.4%) on the power play and 8-for-8 killing off penalties. RIT is 133-of-221 (60.2%) on face offs and have blocked 42 shots.
 
Fourteen Tigers have at tallied at least one point through four games. Aquaro and Kyla Bear are tied for first on the team with four points apiece. Aquaro has two goals and two assists, while Bear leads the Tigers with four assists. Alvarez, senior defensewoman Jessie Burks and Tsilemos are tied for second with three points apiece. Alvarez leads the team with three goals, Tsilemos is second on the team with three assists and Burks leads the Tigers with six blocked shots.
 
Coe is 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage, while Bellina is 1-1-0 with a 1.53 GAA and a .938 save percentage.
 
AHA Rankings
RIT is second in Atlantic Hockey America in scoring (3.0 GPG) and goals allowed (1.75). The Tigers are tied for first killing off 8-for-8 penalties, second in face-off percentage (60.2%) and third converting 3-of-14 (21.4 %) power play chances. 
 
Alvarez is tied for first in the AHA with three goals. First year forward Ireland Stein, Aquaro and Ness are tied for third in the league with two goals apiece. Kyla Bear is tied for first with four assists and Tsilemos is tied for third with three helpers. Kehl is tenth with two assists.
 
Coe is fourth in the AHA with a 1.50 goals-against average, while Bellina is fifth with a 1.53 GAA. Bellina is fourth with a .938 save percentage and Coe is fifth (.925).
 
About Colgate
Colgate is 2-2-0 and ranked seventh in this week's USCHO.com Division I poll. The Raiders split a pair of games against No. 3 Minnesota Duluth last weekend, losing 3-2 on Friday and rebounding with a 3-2 win the following day.
 
Junior forward Elyssa Biederman and Fifth year forward Kristyna Kaltounkova each tallied a goal and an assist in Friday's loss, while senior goaltender Hannah Murphy made 29 saves in net.
 
Sophomore forward Kaia Malachino scored two goals and Junior forward Sara Stewart tallied a goal and an assist in Saturday's win. Stewart's goal early in the third period proved to be the game-winner. Sophomore forward Madeline Palumbo had two assists and Murphy made 42 saves to earn the win.
 
Colgate enter the weekend averaging 2.8 goals per game while allowing 2.8 goals. The Raiders are 6-of-15 (40 %) on the power play and 13-of-16 killing off penalties. Colgate is eighth in Division I with 21 assists, tied for tenth with 11 goals and sixth in power play percentage (40%).
 
Biederman leads Colgate in scoring with five points on two goals and three assists. Malachino and Kaltounkova are tied for second with four points apiece. Malachino leads the Raiders with three goals, while Kaltounkova and Biederman are tied with three assists. Murphy is 2-2-0 this season with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.
 
RIT vs. Colgate
RIT is 14-14-2 all-time against Colgate. The Raiders swept two games against RIT in 2022-23, winning 9-0 and 5-0. RIT's last win over Colgate was 2-0 win on Oct. 18, 2013.
 
National Rankings
RIT is tied for eighth in Division I in goals (12) and ninth in assists (20). The Tigers are tied for first nationally, killing off 8-of-8 penalties and seventh in scoring defense (1.75). RIT is 16th in Division I, converting 3-of-14 (21.4%) of its power play chances and tied for 11th averaging 3.0 goals per contest.
 
Kyla Bear and Mia Tsilemos are tied for 7th (1.50) and Jessie Burks and first-year forward Kailey Favro are tied for 19th (1.00) in assists.
 
First year forward Brac Kelley is tied for 21st in the country with 20 face-off wins and Addie Alvarez is tied for 11th with two goals. Bellina and Coe are tied for second with a shutout win apiece.
 
They Come from Far and Wide
The 26 Tigers hail from 11 states, two Canadian provinces and one country in Europe, with the largest groups coming from Ontario (6), Saskatchewan (4), Pennsylvania (3) and Illinois (3). Players hail from as close as Rochester, NY to as far away as Pale, Latvia (4,192 miles).
 
Ranked Opponents
RIT plays five teams ranked in this week's USCHO Division I Women's Poll. Cornell (No. 6), Colgate (No. 7), St. Lawrence (No. 8), Penn State (No. 12) and Mercyhurst is (No. 15). RIT hosts Colgate this Friday and Saturday and St. Lawrence Oct. 25-26. The Tigers play a home-and-home series against Cornell beginning with a road game (Nov. 26) followed by a home game on Dec. 31. 
 
Atlantic Hockey America
Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) embarks on its first season in 2024-25 after the merger between the Atlantic Hockey Association and College Hockey America. The conference fields 11 men's teams (American International College, Bentley University, Canisius College, The College of Holy Cross, Mercyhurst University, Niagara University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Robert Morris University, Sacred Heart University, the United States Air Force Academy, and the United States Military Academy), and six women's teams (Lindenwood University, Mercyhurst University, Penn State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Robert Morris University, and Syracuse University). In 2025-26, Delaware University will join the women's league.
