Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey falls, 4-2, at Mercyhurst in AHA opener

ERIE, Pa. – RIT graduate-student defenseman Dimitri Mikrogiannakis and junior defenseman Gustav Blom each scored a goal, but it was host Mercyhurst taking a 4-2 victory in both teams' Atlantic Hockey opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a scoreless first period, Mercyhurst scored 2:39 into the second and again at 16:30 to build a 2-0 lead.
  • RIT got on the board at 6:33 of the third after senior Tanner Andrew won a faceoff to the left of the Laker net and dug a puck out of a crowd to senior forward Grady Hobbs. Hobbs slid a pass to the top of the right faceoff circle where Blom scored, near post, on a shot over Mercyhurst goalie Simon Bucheler's glove.
  • With under five minutes left in regulation, Andrew picked off a pass at the top of the Tiger zone and headed the other way with Mikrogiannakis for a two-on-one break. Andrew scooted down the left wing and backhanded a pass through the slot to Mikrogiannakis for a short chip inside the right post with at 15:41.
  • RIT pulled junior goaltender Trent Burnham for an extra skater with under a minute and a half left in regulation, but it was Mercyhurst scoring an empty-netter with 48 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
GAME NOTES
  • Mikrogiannakis' goal was his team-leading third of the season as well as his team-best fourth point. He also scored both Tiger goals in a 3-2 OT loss at St. Lawrence last Saturday in the season-opener before adding an assist in Sunday's 3-2 win at Clarkson.
  • Burnham took the loss despite making 26 saves, including 13 in the opening period.
  • RIT finished with a 33-30 advantage in shots.
  • Andrew logged his second career two-assist game and first since logging a pair in a 4-4 tie at Niagara last season (Feb. 1).
  • RIT killed three penalties while finishing scoreless on two power-play attempts.
  • RIT lost its Atlantic Hockey opener for only the fifth time in program history and for the first time since 2018. Friday was also the first time the Tigers ever started league play against the Lakers.
  • RIT is 1-5-1 in its last seven road games versus Mercyhurst dating back the last six seasons to the 2018-19 campaign. The Tigers split two games in Erie last February, pulling out a 7-6 OT win (Feb. 9) before falling, 3-2, in the rematch.
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT looks to earn the split with a rematch at Mercyhurst on Saturday (Oct. 12) slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
