Matthew Funicelli competed in two events at the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by St. John Fisher at the Polisseni Track & Field Complex.
Funicelli finished 11th in the shot put (15.98m/52' 5.25') after entering the meet ranked 17th and also placed 13th in the hammer (56.36m/184' 11") after entering the week ranked 19th.
Funicelli wrapped up a stellar career for the Tigers. He broke his own program shot put record (16.42m/53' 10.5") with his third-place finish at the Atlantic Regional Championships after bettering his hammer record (57.97m/190' 2") with a first-place performance at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational (Apr. 22) during the season.
He also leaves as the program-record holder in the discus after breaking a 45-year-old record (48.95m/16' 7") as a first-year in 2019.
Funicelli also established two program records during the indoor season, bettering his own marks in the shot put (16.32m/53' 6.5") and the weight throw (17.94m/58' 10.25") last winter. He also finished an All-American sixth in the shot put (16.22m/53' 2.75") at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championships last March.
