RIT Baseball splits with Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team split their Liberty League opener on Monday at Clarkson, losing the first game, 5-3, before winning the second, 4-2.

GAME 1- Clarkson 5, RIT 3
A two-run fifth allowed Clarkson to edge RIT despite a 4-4 game by junior centerfielder John Bagley.
  • The Tigers opened scoring in the top of the second when senior catcher Kyle Poorman hit a sac-fly to make it 1-0. First-year third baseman Charlie Slaymaker extended the lead to 2-0 that inning with an RBI double.
  • Clarkson tied it up in the bottom of that inning with a bases-loaded hit followed by an RBI groundout.
  • In the fifth, senior left fielder Chris Reilly put the Tigers back in front with a two-out RBI single to right-center to make the score 3-2.
  • The Golden Knights pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth, tying it up with a one-out single and then later moving ahead, 4-3, on a sacrifice fly.
  • Clarkson added an insurance run in the eighth.

GAME 2- RIT 4, Clarkson 2 (7 innings)
Senior pitchers John Opalweski and Peter Bossinas combined to allow just four hits over seven innings, while first-year second baseman Jarin Moses was 3-4 with an RBI and Reilly plated two in the Tigers' victory.
  • Reilly got the Tigers on the board first, singling home junior shortstop Randy Dodig in the first inning to make it 1-0. Sophomore right fielder Adam Marsh later knocked home another run on a fielder's choice that brought home Moses to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Clarkson narrowed the lead to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
  • Moses singled home Dodig with no outs in the third to extend the lead to 3-1, while Reilly added another later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1.
  • A bases-loaded walked allowed Clarkson to narrow the score to 4-2, but that score would hold until the end of the game.
