ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT Tigers baseball team honored six seniors before sweeping a doubleheader with Hobart on Sunday, 15-4 and 7-6, with the second game going 10 innings.
The six seniors or graduate students honored were pitcher
Reagan Farley, two-way player
Maxx Countryman, pitcher
Matt Vitro, pitcher
Jon Opalewski, outfielder
Chris Reilly, and first baseman
Ian Libby. They were recognized before the game alongside family and friends and presented with framed jerseys.
GAME 1- RIT 15, HOBART 4
Reilly tied the program record for doubles in a game with three, driving in four runs in the process, as the Tigers won the opening game of the doubleheader by a 15-4 score.
- Serving as the visiting team in the first game, the Tigers jumped ahead early in the top of first inning, as Reilly doubled to left center with the bases loaded to give RIT the early 3-0 lead.
- First year designated hitter Roberto Reade would knock Reilly home on a single later in the inning to extend the lead to 4-0.
- The Tigers added five in the top of the second, including a two-RBI double by junior center fielder John Bagley, to increase the lead to 9-0.
- The Tigers put up three more runs in the fifth, including a two-run home run Libby, to enter double-digits and make the score 12-0.
- Hobart got on the board with two each in the fourth and fifth to narrow the score to 12-4.
- RIT put an exclamation point on the game with three runs in the seventh and final inning, including Reilly's third double of the game, which brought home Libby for the final score of 15-4.
- Reilly's three doubles moved him to 16 for the season, tied for first on the program's single-season leaderboard.
- Graduate Student Erik Sipling earned the win with five innings of work, while Farley threw two hitless innings in relief on his senior day.
GAME 2- RIT 7, HOBART 6 (10 INNINGS)
A tenth-inning single by first-year third baseman
Charlie Slaymaker gave the Tigers a 7-6 walkoff win to complete the Senior Day sweep.
- The Tigers took an early lead in the second, as sophomore right fielder Adam Marsh knocked a ball over the right field fence for his third home run of the year. The solo shot put RIT ahead, 1-0.
- The Statesmen struck back in the top of the third with three runs, tying the game on a single by Ty Gallagher, take the lead on a wild pitch, and then extending the lead with a Will Jones single to make it 3-1.
- Reilly continued his hot hitting for the day in the sixth, singling home Bagley to make narrow the Statesmen lead to one before tying it up, 3-3, when he scored on a wild pitch.
- A RBI single by Nate Garrett in the eighth put Hobart ahead, 4-3, in the eighth. Garrett would later score by taking home during a double-steal to extend their lead to 5-3.
- Reilly opened the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to center to put the Tigers within one, 5-4. The home run was Reilly's first of the season and the 13th of his career, tying Mark Klienke (1977-1980) for third all-time in the program's history.
- With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Slaymaker tripled to right, setting up a game-tying RBI double by junior shortstop Randy Dodig the next at-bat. The game went to extra innings tied, 5-5.
- Hobart jumped into the lead in the top of the 10th on a two-out RBI single by Joe McCoy to pull ahead, 6-5.
- RIT tied the game, 6-6, in the bottom of the 10th, as Marsh singled home Reilly.
- After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Slaymaker came to the plate. He hit a long fly ball over the heads of the Hobart outfielders who were playing in for the walk-off, officially notching an RBI single for the 7-6 win in 10.
- Reilly went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Slaymaker finished 3-for-5 with the lone game-winning RBI.
- First-year pitcher Jack Luensmann earned the win in relief, going two innings without allowing an earned run while striking out three.
- Senior starter Alex Slotter struck out a career-high 12 in eight innings in the no-decision.
