Softball swept at Union, 10-4, 12-9

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The RIT softball team lost two Liberty League games at Union, 10-4 and 12-9, Sunday afternoon.
 
GAME 1 – UNION 10, RIT 4
  • Senior Alexis Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while sophomore Bailey Kehl finished 1-for-3 and scored two runs.
  • Union built and early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first.
  • RIT got on the board in the third inning after Smith doubled home Kehl with two outs.
  • Union answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to build a 5-1 lead.
  • The Dutchwomen notched two more runs in the fifth inning, before the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Maddy Cook knocked a one-out single to left and, after stealing second, advanced to third on a single by first-year Autumn Broyles. Broyles stole second before sophomore Lexi Pieri advanced both runners with an RBI single up the middle.  Broyles then scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-3 game.
  • Union put the game out of reach with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Smith plated Kehl with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for the final run. 
GAME 2 – UNION 12, RIT 9
  • Graduate student Haley Czerwinski finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI while Broyles ended up 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Union opened a 5-0 first inning lead before RIT answered with three runs on five hits in the top of the second. Broyles and first-year Jessica Majot knocked back-to-back one-out singles before first-year Bella Pioggia loaded the bases with a two-out single up the middle. Czerwinski followed with a two-run single before junior Elise Guth re-loaded the bases with a walk. Sophomore Lillian Rienstra followed with a one-run single up the middle to pull the Tigers within two, 5-3.
  • Union retook a 6-3 lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but RIT responded with a six-run fourth inning to forge a 9-6 edge. Pioggia led off with a double to left and scored on a Czerwinski single to left. Guth and Rienstra loaded the bases with back-to-back hits before Kehl brought home Czerwinski with an RBI single and Guth also scored on a Union throwing error. Kehl stole second before Smith plated Rienstra with a single through the left side. Broyles brought home Smith with an RBI single before sophomore Kristin Hino later doubled pinch runner Cook home to complete the rally.
  • Union got one back in the fourth with a solo homerun by K Saunders and scored four more times in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
