Baseball sweeps doubleheader with St. Lawrence, 20-11 and 11-7

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team swept a doubleheader with Liberty League foe St. Lawrence on Tuesday at RIT's baseball complex, winning the first game, 20-11, before emerging victorious in game two, 11-7.

GAME 1- RIT 20, St. Lawrence 11
Junior center fielder John Bagley went 4-5 with seven RBI, while first-year third baseman Charlie Slaymaker hit the first two home runs of his collegiate career, including an inside-the-park grand slam, as the Tigers won the opener. First-year catcher Roberto Reade and sophomore right fielder Adam Marsh also went yard for the first time in their college careers.
  • After a five-run top of the first by St. Lawrence, the Tigers tied the game up with a five-run first of their own. First-year second baseman Jarin Moses singled home junior shortstop Randy Dodig with no outs and scored himself later in the inning on a two-out, three-run base-clearing double by Bagley to make it 5-4. Reade then doubled to right-center to drive in Bagley and tie the game at five.
  • The Saints pulled ahead in the top of the second with a leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice fly by Timothy Connor to make the game 6-5.
  • Marsh led off the bottom of the third with a deep drive over the right-centerfield fence for his first collegiate home run, tying the game at six.
  • The Tigers broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs, including a three-run home run by Reade, followed by a solo shot by Slaymaker to make the score 13-6.
  • With the bases loaded in the fifth and two outs, Slaymaker hit a ball to center that got past the St. Lawrence center fielder, who was injured on the play. Slaymaker and the other runners scored for the inside-the-park grand slam that extended the lead to 17-6.
  • St. Lawrence came back with five runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the score to 17-11, but a Bagley two-run single and a Slaymaker RBI single in the bottom of the inning permanently put the game away, 20-11.
GAME 2- RIT 11, St. Lawrence 7
Dodig notched five RBI, Slaymaker went 2-3 with three RBI, and Eric Sipling won in his first start of the season to conclude the doubleheader.
  • St. Lawrence struck in the top of the first with a leadoff double by Brett Federico, followed by two straight groundouts that allowed him to advance home to make it 1-0.
  • The Tigers tied it in the bottom of the first on a two-out Marsh single to score Moses and knot the game, 1-1.
  • RIT took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by senior catcher Kyle Poorman. Two more runs scored later in the inning on sacrifice flies by Dodig and graduate student Ian Libby to make it 4-1.
  • Slaymaker continued his hot hitting with a single in the fifth that scored a run. The next batter, Dodig, doubled to clear the bases and extend the lead to 8-1.
  • St. Lawrence narrowed the lead to 8-2 in the top of the sixth, but Slaymaker got the run back and more with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to make the score 10-2.
  • The Tigers added insurance in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-loaded walk by Dodig that extended the lead to 11-2.
  • A late five-run rally by St. Lawrence fell short, and the Tigers took the 11-7 win, with senior Matt Vitro earning the save.
