Softball sweeps Houghton, 11-2 (5 inn.), 11-5

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The RIT softball team swept host Houghton, 11-2 (5 inn.) and 11-5, Saturday. 
 
GAME 1 – RIT 11, HOUGHTON 2 (5 INN.)
  • First-year Autumn Broyles and sophomore Bailey Kehl each finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Tigers' 11-hit showing.
  • RIT plated two runs in the first inning. Kehl led off the game with a walk and eventually came around on an RBI single by sophomore Maddy Cook before Cook later came home on a double by senior Alexis Smith.
  • Houghton tied the game with a pair of runs in the second, but RIT responded with a run in the top of the third after junior Elise Guth knocked a triple down the right field line and came home on a Highlander throwing error.
  • The Tigers put the game away with four runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth. Sophomore Kristin Hino and Broyles notched back-to-back RBI doubles before Kehl notched an RBI hit and Guth brought home another with a sacrifice fly to highlight the fourth.
  • Sophomore Lillian Rienstra added a two-run single in the fifth to go along with an RBI double by Broyles and an RBI single by Kehl to put the game out of reach.
  • First-year Jessica Majot earned the complete-game victory, holding Houghton to four hits while striking out six.
GAME 2 – RIT 11, HOUGHTON 5
  • First-year Marissa Giuntoli went 3-for-4 with her first collegiate homerun, a double, two runs scored and three RBI as the Tigers completed the doubleheader sweep.
  • Smith was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while Broyles was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Tigers to a season-high 18 hits.
  • RIT plated a run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Cook and built a 2-0 lead in the second on Giuntoli's solo shot over the left field fence.
  • Houghton tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on the first of two homeruns in the game by Cheyanne Bushyhead, and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the third.
  • The Tigers came back with two runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI hits by Kehl and Guth, but Houghton retook the lead, 5-4, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
  • RIT built a 10-5 lead with a decisive six-run sixth inning. Smith led off the inning with a double to right before graduate student Haley Czerwinski followed with a single to right. Giuntoli brought them both home with a double to left and, after advancing to third on a Highlander throwing error, came home on a RBI groundout by Broyles. Cook knocked a two-run double and came home on an RBI single by Ozminkowski to finish the rally.
  • Kehl brought home the final run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.
  • Sophomore Lexi Pieri earned the relief victory, only allowing three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore starter Morgan Best struck out a career-high seven batters over the first 4.1 innings.
