Softball splits with Elmira, falls, 9-3, wins, 8-1

ELMIRA, N.Y. – RIT split a road doubleheader at Elmira, falling 9-3 in the opener before rebounding with an 8-1 decision in game-two.
 
GAME 2 – RIT 8, ELMIRA 1
  • Graduate student Erin Ozminkowski finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI while first-year Hannah Slater went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
  • First-year Jessica Majot threw a complete-game three-hitter, striking out five while only allowing one earned run.She also threw seven scoreless innings in her previous start on a Wednesday in a 0-0 tie with Oswego. 
  • RIT scored a run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Ozminkowski and another in the fourth on an RBI groundout by sophomore Lexi Pieri to build a 2-0 lead.
  • The Tigers broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Pieri knocked a one-out double to left before coming home on an error by the Elmira pitcher off the bat of sophomore Bailey Kehl. Two batters later, Ozminkowski knocked a two-run, bases-loaded single down the leftfield line, before senior Alexis Smith followed with an infield single to bring home sophomore Lillian Rienstra. Slater later brought two more runs home with a double down the leftfield line to push RIT to an 8-0 lead.
  • Elmira extended the game with a two-out run in the bottom of the sixth. 
GAME 1 – ELMIRA 9, RIT 3
  • Kehl and sophomore Kristin Hino each went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, but the Tigers couldn't come back from an early 7-0 deficit in the opener.
  • Elmira plated four runs on three hits in the first inning and brought across three runs on four hits in the second.
  • RIT got two back with a two-out rally in the third. Majot drew a walk and came around on Kehl's double to center, before Rienstra plated Kehl with an RBI double to right.
  • Elmira notched single runs in the third and the fourth to build a 9-2 edge.
  • Hino led off the fifth with a double to centerfield and eventually came home on an RBI groundout by first-year Autumn Broyles for what proved to be the game's final run.
  • Pieri took the loss, allowing six earned through two innings of work. Sophomore Morgan Best held Elmira to two runs and two hits in four innings of relief.

RIT travels to St. John Fisher next Wednesday (Mar. 29) for a doubleheader slated for a 3:00 p.m. first-pitch.
