ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT softball team hosted Oswego in its first two home games of the 2023 season, Wednesday. The Lakers took the opener, 6-5, while the teams tied, 0-0, in the second game suspended after seven innings due to darkness.
GAME 1 – OSWEGO 6, RIT 5
- RIT sophomore Erin Ozminkowsi finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI while first-year Hannah Slater went 2-for-2 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI.
- Oswego took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, including a two-out, two-run double by Krista Sounders.
- RIT was held to three hits through the first five innings before tying the game with a three-run sixth. Senior Alexis Smith reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming home on Ozminkowski's triple to the right-centerfield gap. First-year Hannah Slater later tied the score with her first collegiate homerun, knocking a two-out, 2-2 pitch over the left-centerfield wall.
- The Lakers retook a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh with three runs on four hits.
- RIT answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI ground-out by sophomore Bailey Kehl and a two-out RBI single up the middle Ozminknowski, but was unable to find another run.
- Sophomore Morgan Best took the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
GAME 2 – RIT 0, OSWEGO 0
- Junior Elise Guth finished 3-for-4 with a triple while sophomore Mady Cook ended 2-for-3 with a double.
- First-year Jessica Majot threw a complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits while striking out four.
- The Lakers loaded the bases with two outs in the third, and again with one out in the sixth, but finished the game stranding nine total runners.
- Sophomore Maddy Cook made a diving catch in centerfield with the bases loaded in the sixth to keep the Lakers scoreless.
- Majot led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side before sophomore Lillian Rienstra later reached on an infield single and Guth loaded the bases with a single to center. Kehl followed with a fly-out to right field before Majot was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from third to end the game.
