Marsh walk-off highlights 2-1 Baseball weekend

ORLANDO, FL. – The RIT baseball team went 2-1 in weekend action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, sweeping a doubleheader against Lakeland on Saturday before falling to Wheaton (Mass.) on Sunday.

GAME 1 – RIT 10, Lakeland 2
Senior starting pitcher Jon Opalewski threw six innings in his first win of the season, striking out eight while allowing only three hits and two runs. Senior LF Chris Reilly led the way at the plate, going 3-5 with a double and two RBIs.
  • Lakeland struck first, scoring a run in the second.
  • RIT tied the game in the third, 1-1, on a two-out single by Reilly that plated first-year 2B Jarin Moses.
  • The Tigers took the lead, 2-1, on a single by junior CF John Bagley with one out in the fourth.
  • RIT would ultimately score eight runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead, including a double by graduate 1B Ian Libby that scored two.
  • The Muskies scored another run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch to make the score 9-2.
  • Junior shortstop Randy Dodig singled home Moses in the fifth for the final 10-2 score.
  • Sophomore pitcher Jacob Statman worked a scoreless inning of relief to end the game.
GAME 2 – RIT 8, Lakeland 7
The Tigers walked-off Lakeland in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 8-7, on a single by sophomore RF Adam Marsh. First-year pitcher Jack Luensmann made his first career start and threw three innings of one-hit ball.
  • RIT opened scoring with a four-run first inning, as Reilly doubled home Libby before being singled home by Bagley. Senior DH Zach Mecca hit a two-out triple to plate two to make the score 4-0.
  • Lakeland's Austin Palmer narrowed the lead to 4-1 in the second, singling home Griffin Robinson.
  • The Tigers extended the lead back to four when Reilly scored on a groundout by senior C Kyle Poorman in the third to make the score 5-1.
  • The Muskies scored two more runs in the fourth on an error to close the gap to 5-3.
  • Mecca doubled home two in the sixth to move the Tigers further ahead, 7-3.
  • Lakeland scored four in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 7-7.
  • With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Libby singled and then stole second. Lakeland intentionally walked Reilly, but Marsh then singled in Libby from second the final 8-7 score.
 
GAME 3 – Wheaton (Mass.) 3, RIT 1
The Tigers dropped their game on Sunday despite the first collegiate home run of Moses' career.
  • Wheaton catcher Robert Wirtanen put the Lyons ahead, 2-0, with one out in the bottom of the first with a single to left that plated two.
  • Moses homered to left with one out in the seventh to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
  • Wheaton added an insurance run in the eighth for the final 3-1 score.
  • Senior starting pitcher Alex Slotter allowed three hits and two earned runs in four innings of work, while Sipling allowed two hits and no earned runs in four innings of relief. Both pitchers struck out three.
