WASHINGTON, D.C. – The RIT Tigers set program records for runs (29), hits (33), total bases (52), and RBIs (29) while graduate 1B
Ian Libby went 7-7 to set a program record for hits by a player in a game as RIT defeated host Gallaudet in the final game of the Gallaudet Bison Baseball Classic on Sunday, 29-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers, serving as the home team, struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, as Libby doubled to left-center to bring home junior SS Randy Dodig to put RIT ahead, 1-0. Libby would later score on a single by senior C Kyle Poorman to make it 2-0.
- RIT started the bottom of the second with doubles by first year 2B Jarin Moses, Dodig, and Libby, bringing home two more runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Libby tripled with two outs in the third to plate two more runs, and then scored when senior LF Chris Reilly doubled him home in the next at-bat to make the score 8-0
- Gallaudet's lone run came in the fourth on a walk and wild pitch, but the Tigers got that run right back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo shot by sophomore CF Sam Kulp to regain the eight-run lead, 9-1.
- The Tigers stayed in the lead for the rest of the contest, eventually extending their lead to the final score, 29-1, on a two-out pinch-hit grand slam by senior LF Maxx Countryman in the bottom of the eighth. The home run was Countryman's first as a college player.
GAME NOTES:
- Senior Alex Slotter pitched four no-hit innings for the win, and was followed by three innings of no-hit ball by senior Peter Bossinas and two shutout innings by first year Trent Rapp, who made his collegiate pitching debut in relief.
- The 29 runs scored by RIT eclipsed the previous mark of 27, scored on April 9, 2022 against St. Lawrence. That game also saw the previous high for hits (27), total bases (45), and RBI (27).
- Libby's seven hits eclipse the previous mark of six, set by Walt Roman against Bard on April 4, 2014.
- Libby's seven RBIs fell one short of tying the program single-game record for the stat, set in 1999 by Zach Shuta and tied in 2016 by Will Gorman.
- Junior 3B John Bagley went 5-6 with a double, 4 RBIs, and six runs scored, overtaking the single-game runs-scored record set by Walt Roman in 2014 and Patrick Blackall on April 9, 2022 against St. Lawrence. Dodig and Libby each scored five times.
- Libby finished a home run short of the cycle on the game and also notched a walked.
- Dodig went 5-7 with a double.
- RIT's 3-0 start is the program's best since 2015, when the Tigers began the season with four straight wins.
