Baseball beats SUNY Canton, 5-4

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Graduate student Eric Sipling threw four innings of one-hit relief as RIT beat SUNY Canton, 5-4, in a weather-delayed game Saturday and Sunday at the Gallaudet Bison Baseball Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior DH Kyle Poorman plated senior Chris Reilly in the first on a single to left to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
  • Canton came back with one run in the second and two in the third to take the 3-1 lead.
  • The game was suspended in the middle of the fourth inning on Saturday due to winter weather. It would resume on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
  • First-year Roberto Reade scored on a dropped fly ball in the fourth to narrow the Canton lead to 3-2.
  • Poorman tripled in the fifth to score graduate student Ian Libby to tie the game, 3-3.
  • The Roos retook the lead in the top of the sixth on a throwing error to make the score 4-3.
  • Libby singled and advanced on a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth to score first-year Jarin Moses and first-year 3B Charlie Slaymaker to give the Tigers the 5-4 lead.
  • The Tigers held that lead for the rest of the game.
Game Notes
  • Senior Jon Opalewski started the game on Saturday, allowing five hits and one earned run in four innings before the game was suspended, striking out six.
  • Sipling struck out seven in his first Tigers win.
  • The Tigers outhit Canton, 8-6.
  • Reade walked twice in his first collegiate game.
