Men's Hockey beats Air Force 5-2 on Senior Night

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT sophomore forward Tanner Andrew scored two goals to lead the Tigers to a 5-2 win over Air Force on Senior Night, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Air Forced got on the board 2:37 into the contest after Andrew DeCarlo one-timed a cross from Willie Reim to finish an odd-man rush.  
  • Senior forward Colton Trumbla carried the puck into the Falcon zone and scored on a wrist from the top of the left face-off circle, glove-side, with 2:56 remaining in the first period.  
  • Senior defenseman Gianfranco Cassaro scored 3:28 in the second period to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Junior defenseman Aiden Hansen-Bukata and Boots had the assists on the play.
  • The Falcons tied the score on an Austin Schwartz goal seven minutes into the third period off an assist from Holt Oliphant.
  • Senior defenseman Ryan Nicholson took a feed from first-year forward Tyler Mahan and scored on a blast from the right faceoff circle to give RIT a 3-2 lead with 11:28 left in the third period. 
  • Andrew scored  a pair of empty-net goals to put the game out of reach, the first coming with 2:32 remaining and the second with 1:50 left.
 
GAME NOTES 
  • RIT's 22 wins are the third-most in a season in the Division I era. (2009-10, 28-12-1, 2008-09, 23-13-2) and tie the 2009-10 team for the most regular season victories in program history. 
  • RIT outshot Air Force 34-27.
  • Hansen-Bukata's assist was his 30th point of the season.
  • Trumbla's goal was his first of the season. 
  • Senior goaltender Kolby Matthews made 25 saves to earn the win.
  • Eight Tigers were honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony - manager Spencer Szachara, Calvon Boots, Matt Kellenberger, Matthews, Ryan Nicholson, Trumbla and alternate captains Elijah Gonsalves and Caleb Moretz.
 
WHAT'S NEXT 
 
RIT earned the top seed for the Atlantic Hockey Tournament and will host eighth-seeded Mercyhurst in a best-of-three series next Friday and Saturday (March 3-4) and Sunday (March 5) if necessary. Friday and Saturday's games will start at 7:05 p.m. while Sunday's game would start at 5:05 p.m. if played.
