Wrestling places second at 57th RIT Invitational

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior Lee Rubin (125 lb.) and first-year Bryson Vaughn (141 lb.) won their weight classes to help the Tigers to a second-place finish at the 57th RIT Invitational, Saturday.
 
After a bye, top-seeded Rubin defeated Ari Kefer (Oswego) with a fall at 1:21 in his opening match. He defeated No. 8 Luke Heimbach (Penn Tech) with a fall at 2:04 in the quarterfinals, and took down Carl Santoriello (SJFC) with a 25-5 technical fall in the semifinals. Rubin defeated No. 2 Alexander Schaeublin (Trinity), 6-3 in the championship bout.
 
Vaughn, the fifth seed, defeated James Hoyt (Norwich) with a 15-0 technical fall in his opening bout. He pinned Daniel Echeverria (Trinity) at 3:31 and advanced out of the quarterfinals after Shallen Savur (Wesleyan) had to retire because of an injury. Vaughn defeated Americo Milani (John Carroll) with a fall at 1:15 in the semifinals and beat No. 2 Art Martinez (Case Western), 15-3 in the finals.
 
Senior Ben Dougherty, the No. 2 seed, placed second at 174 lb. After a bye, Dougherty beat Thomas Bentivoglio (Case Western) with a 15-0 technical fall in his opening bout. He defeated Zach Borzio (Williams), 7-0 in the quarterfinals and Simon Bishop (Case Western) with a 13-3 major decision in the semifinals. Dougherty lost 10-3 to No. 1 Charlie Grygas (Oswego) in the championship match.
 
First-year Ryan Fischer placed second at 285 lb., while classmate Josh Lanka placed third. Fischer defeated No. 3 Seth Phillips (Thiel) with a fall at 4:41 in the quarterfinals, No. 2 Nicholai Brotzman, 4-2 in the semifinals, before falling 11-0 to No. 1 Mason Sprinkel (Norwich) in the championship bout.
 
Lanka defeated Lukas Cylwik (Trinity), 5-2 in his opening match and Keishon Martin (Norwich) with a fall at 4:17 in his second bout. Lanka lost to No. 2 Brotzman in the quarterfinals, but came back to win two matches in the consolation round, including a pin of Timothy Glynn (Trinity) at 1:19 to take third place.
 
Senior Austin Bourgeois placed fifth at 149 lb., while junior Liam Strouse (165 lb.) and sophomore Tyler Balent (174 lb.) each placed sixth.
 
RIT returns to action on Friday (Jan. 5) at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa
