ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 20 RIT men's hockey team lost a 2-0 decision to visiting Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey action, Saturday, snapping a five-game win streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT out-shot Mercyhurst, 51-14, including 21 shots in the second period, but couldn't solve Laker goaltender Simon Bucheler, who notched a shutout in his second career start. He also made 15 saves and allowed one goal in 32:39 of work off the bench in Friday night's 5-2 Tiger victory.
- Mercyhurst scored with 7:45 left in the first period after Micky Burns slipped a short pass in the low slot to Boris Skalos in front of the left post for a short finish behind Scarfone.
- The Lakers notched a power play goal with 12:29 left in the third after Keanan Stewart cleaned up a rebound off a shot in the slot by Adrien Bisson.
GAME NOTES
- The Tigers were shutout for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Holy Cross in last year's Atlantic Hockey Semifinals (Mar.10).
- RIT finished 0-for-4 on the power play, including a one-minute, 48-second 5-on-3 attempt with five minutes left in the second period.
- The Tigers killed seven-of-eight Laker power plays.
- RIT took the most shots since totaling 52 in a 5-3 victory over Mercyhurst in the opening game of last year's Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series (Mar. 3).
- RIT allowed the fewest shot since holding Sacred Heart to 15 shots in a 5-1 win on Feb. 1, 2022 in a game played at Army.
- Tiger goaltender Tommy Scarfone totaled 12 saves, surpassing Shane Madolora '12 for fourth place in program history (D1 era) with 1,733 career saves to date.
