Women's Volleyball takes two over St. Lawrence, Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT women's volleyball team won a pair of matches, Saturday, taking down Liberty League-rival St. Lawrence, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18) and Nazareth, 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21)
 
RIT 3, St. Lawrence 1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18)
  • RIT trailed, 8-7, early in the first before putting together a 6-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Tigers led, 16-14, but surrendered a 5-0 run to fall behind, 19-16. The Saints built a 22-18 edge, but RIT scored four-consecutive points to knot the score, 22-22. St. Lawrence won three final points to clinch the opening win.
  • RIT built an early 11-6 lead in the second, before St. Lawrence came back to knot the score, 12-12. Later tied, 14-14, the teams traded sideouts before the Tigers broke a 20-20 tie with a 4-1 run and evened the match score after putting away their second set point on a kill by junior outside hitter Samantha Cox.
  • St. Lawrence jumped out to a 7-3, third-set lead before RIT answered with a 6-0 run for a 9-7 edge. Later tied, 10-10, RIT scored five-consecutive points to kick off a 7-4 run to build a 17-14 lead. The Tigers scored the next seven points to close the third with an 8-1 run.
  • RIT opened an 11-4 fourth-set lead and later used a 5-1 surge to forge a 16-7 edge. The Saints got back within five, 22-17, but RIT won three of the final four points to seal the match.
  • Cox and first-year opposite Macie Jolliffe led the Tigers with 14 kills apiece, while Jolliffe also added eight digs and tied a career-high with seven service aces.
  • First-year defensive specialist Jenell Hall also logged career-high six service aces as RIT tied a season-high with 17 service aces.
  • Senior libero Hailey Blixt finished with a season-high 21 digs while senior setter Sydney Neff tied a season-high with 37 assists. 
RIT 3, Nazareth 1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21)
  • RIT opened a 10-4 first-set lead that grew to as many as 12, 18-6. The Tigers later reached match point, 24-13, before putting the opening set away on their third opportunity.
  • Nazareth returned the favor in the second, opening a 12-2 lead that grew to as many as 11 on two occasions, including 19-8. Facing a 21-11 deficit, RIT stormed back with a 13-3 run to take a 24-23. Nazareth fought off two set points, finishing with three unanswered to hold on to the victory.
  • Tied, 8-8, in the third, the lead changed hands five times while neither team led by more than one until the Tigers rode a 3-0 surge to a 23-21 lead. Nazareth scored the next point, but RIT closed the set with two final points to take the overall lead.
  • RIT held a slim, 11-10, lead in the fourth before riding a 7-2 surge to a decisive 18-12 edge. Nazareth fought back within two, 20-18, but the Tigers closed the match with a 5-3 run, including two kills by junior middle Cat Vento, to seal the win.
  • Neff eclipsed her season high again with 45 assists to go along with 14 digs and five service aces.
  • Cox led the Tigers with 15 kills, followed by senior middle blocker Grace Phelan's 12 on .550 hitting.
  • Blixt added a team-high 16 digs along with three service aces. 
WHAT'S NEXT
RIT plays a non-league match at Morrisville this Tuesday (Oct. 10) at 6:00 p.m. before returning home for the RIT Invitational next Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14).
