Women's Volleyball takes down Union, 3-1

SCENECTADY, N.Y. – The RIT women's volleyball team won a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21) victory at Liberty League-foe Union, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT broke a 10-10 first-set tie with a 5-1 run for a 15-11 lead. Union got back within one on two occasions, including 18-17, before later re-tying the game, 23-23, with a 3-0 surge. Back-to-back kills by first-year Mia Gerber and junior Cat Vento secured RIT the opening win.
  • Union broke a 3-3 second-set tie with a 6-0 run for a 9-3 lead and later scored four-consecutive points for a 12-4 lead. The Tigers clawed their way back within one, 15-14, before taking a 19-18 lead, but Union answered with a 4-1 run for a 22-20 lead. RIT tied it, 22-22, but Union scored back-to-back points to even the match.
  • RIT rode a 5-1 run to a 13-9 lead in the third, before Union later came back within one, 15-14. The Tigers later led 20-16 before the Garnet Chargers came back to tie the score, 20-20. The Tigers built a 23-21 lead, but Union won three-straight points for a 24-23 edge. Back-to-back kills by Tiger first-year Macie Jolliffe, followed by a solo block by senior Grace Phelan iced the two-point win.
  • Tied, 5-5, in the fourth, RIT used a 5-2 run to build a 10-7 lead, but Union responded with a 6-1 surge for a 13-11 lead. Later tied, 16-16, the Tigers put together a 5-2 run for a 21-18 lead. Union pulled back within one, 22-21, but RIT scored the final three points to clinch the victory. 
MATCH NOTES
  • Jolliffe finished with a team-high 14 kills to go along with 15 digs.
  • Samantha Cox added 13 kills and three blocks.
  • Senior Sydney Neff was credited with 42 assists, a career-high 19 digs and four blocks (1 solo).
  • First-year defensive specialist Jenell Hall logged 17 digs.
