Wilkie, Scarfone named Atlantic Hockey Players of the Month

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT sophomore forward Carter Wilkie was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month and sophomore Tommy Scarfone was tabbed the Goaltender of the Month, Tuesday, as the league recognized the top players in the conference for January.

Wilkie landed his second monthly conference award of the season after also being named the November Player of the Month while Scarfone earned the first of his career.

Wilkie totaled a team-high nine points on four goals and five points, while winning 84 faceoffs during the month. He was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week after totaling five points on a goal and four assists along with 20 faceoffs wins in the Tigers' road sweep of Arizona State (Jan. 20-21). He also logged three goals in RIT's Holy Cross series, including back-to-back third-period tallies less than three minutes apart, to clinch a 4-3 victory (Jan. 27) en route to his second-straight Player of the Week nod.

Wilkie currently leads Atlantic Hockey and is tied for 12th in the country with 31 points and also leads the conference and is tied for 13th nationally with 1.19 points per game. His 13 goals are the second-highest total in the conference and his 18 assists are fourth, while his 304 total faceoff victories are the nation's 10th-best mark.

Scarfone went 5-1-1 in seven January starts, including a pair of Atlantic Hockey shutouts, while compiling a .930 save percentage and a 1.83 GAA. In his six conference starts, he was 4-1-1 with a .926 save percentage and a 1.96 goals against average.

Scarfone was named the Goaltender of the Week after only allowing one goal in a two-game sweep at Bentley (Jan. 6-7), stopping 58 of 59 shots in 3-0 and 3-1 wins. Scarfone also shutout visiting Mercyhurst, 1-0, stopping all 18 shots he faced (Jan. 14) after making 20 saves in a 4-4 draw the night before. He registered his ninth 30-plus save outing of the season with 31 stops (13 in the 3rd period) to preserve the 4-3 victory at Holy Cross (Jan. 27).

Ranked No. 18 in this week's USCHO national poll, RIT (18-7-1, 14-3-1 AHA) plays an Atlantic Hockey home-and-home series versus Canisius this coming weekend. The Tigers will travel to Buffalo on Friday (Feb. 3) for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff at the LECOM Harbor Center before returning for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff on Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Gene Polisseni Center.
