Baseball splits against Rochester on Senior Day; wins 9-4, falls 4-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Rochester, with a 9-4 win in the first game, followed by a 4-2 loss, in Liberty League play on Senior Day, Saturday.

In game one, Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Tigers tied the game in the fourth. RIT went ahead 4-1 after seven, and 9-2 after eight, before the Yellowjackets scored the game's last two runs in the ninth.

Game two's 4-2 loss came after a two-run home run by RIT gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead heading into the final inning. The Yellowjackets plated four to take the game in the top of the seventh.

GAME 1 – RIT 9, ROCHESTER 4
  • Rochester took a 1-0 lead in the first after an RBI single.
  • The Tigers tied the game 1-1 in the fourth when senior third baseman Patrick Blackall scored after freshman designated hitter Adam Marsh reached first on an error.
  • RIT went ahead 4-1 after seven innings when Blackall brought home senior centerfielder Will Porter on a sacrifice fly and then senior right fielder Nic Stagnitta hit a two-run single that scored senior left fielder Chris Reilly and senior first baseman Ian Libby.
  • The Tigers extended their lead to 9-2 after eight innings with a five-run inning highlighted by Blackall's three-run double that scored Libby, sophomore second baseman John Bagley and Porter.
  • Rochester scored the final two runs in the ninth on a walk and sacrifice fly.
GAME 2 – ROCHESTER 4, RIT 2
  • Reillys' two-run home run gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Rochester got four runs in the seventh to take the contest. Luke Piontek's single tied the game at 2-2. The Yellowjackets got the game winning run after a failed pickoff attempt at first allowed Rochester's third-base runner to steal home. Jackson Reed's triple brought home Rochester's final run.
GAME NOTES
  • Six departing RIT players were honored on Senior Day and included pitchers Trevor Povlock, Liam Barry and Collin Reformat; infielder Blackall; and outfielders Stagnitta and Porter.
  • RIT's win coupled with Clarkson's two losses Saturday, secured third place for the Tigers in the Liberty League West Division.
  • In the first game, Bagley had a team-high three hits.
  • Blackall finished with four RBI, and Stagnitta with three.
  • Sophomore pitcher John Arnold earned his second win after allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts.
  • In the second game, RIT finished with five hits from Reilly, Libby, Blackall, sophomore shortstop Randy Dodig, and freshman centerfielder Sam Kulp.
  • Senior pitcher Jon Opalewski suffered the loss after going the distance with four hits allowed, four runs and two walks with seven strikeouts.
