Baseball splits against St. Lawrence; wins 11-6, falls 6-5

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting St. Lawrence, with an 11-6 win, followed by a 6-5 loss, in Liberty League play, Sunday.

In game one, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but St. Lawrence responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. RIT got a run in the fourth to get within a pair at 5-3 and then added seven runs in the fifth for a 10-6 lead. Each team added a run down the stretch for an 11-6 final.

Game two's 6-5 loss came in the bottom of the ninth when St. Lawrence broke a 5-5 deadlock after the Tigers rallied to tie the game with two runs in the eighth and three runs in the ninth.

GAME 1 – RIT 11, ST. LAWRENCE 6
  • RIT took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after freshman second baseman Christopher Colella singled to score freshman designated hitter Adam Marsh. Freshman centerfielder Sam Kulp's double then scored sophomore shortstop Randy Dodig.
  • St. Lawrence scored five in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead with scoring plays coming from three doubles and two singles.
  • In the fourth, RIT got within a pair at 5-3 when Kulp's double scored Colella.
  • Seven RIT runs in the fifth gave the Tigers the lead for good at 10-5. Dodig singled to score Marsh. Colella singled to score graduate student right fielder Nic Stagnitta. Kulps' third double of the game scored Dodig. Sophomore catcher John Bagley's sacrifice fly scored Colella. Senior first baseman Ian Libby singled to bring home Kulp, and senior left fielder Chris Reilly capped the inning with a two-run home run to score Libby.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Andrew Circelli's home run got the Saints within four at 10-6.
  • Stagnitta scored Libby on a fielder's choice in the seventh for the game's final run.
GAME 2 – ST. LAWRENCE 6, RIT 5
  • After three scoreless innings, St. Lawrence scored four runs in the fourth with the first three coming from a Michael Goretti triple, before he crossed the plate after being knocked in by Jake Delaney.
  • Circelli's second home run of the day improved St. Lawrence's lead to 5-0 in the fifth.
  • In the eighth inning, RIT scored twice to make it a 5-2 game. Reilly brought home Dodig and Libby scored off a wild pitch.
  • RIT tied the contest at 5-5 with three runs in the ninth. Libby singled to score Kulp, then Reilly's double brought home Dodig. Marsh doubled to score Reilly to tie the game.
  • St. Lawrence took the contest with a walk-off single by Brian Comerford in the bottom of the ninth.
GAME NOTES
  • In the first game, senior pitcher Jon Opalewski went the distance from the hill to record his fourth win of the season while allowing 11 hits, two walks and striking out 11 in seven innings.
  • Libby, Colella and Kulp led the offense with three hits each.
  • In the second game, sophomore pitcher John Arnold took the loss after allowing eight hits, five runs, one walk with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Junior pitcher Alex Slotter allowed no hits, one walk with four strikeouts in three innings of work, while junior pitcher Peter Bossinas threw the final inning and allowed three hits.
  • Libby and Dodig had a team-best two hits each.
