FORT MYERS, Fla. – The RIT softball team opened the 2022 season with a two-game split at the Gene Cusic Classic, Sunday, defeating Elms, 9-7, after falling to Drew, 11-0 (5 inn.).
GAME 2 – RIT 9, Elms 7
- Senior Hannah Trumble went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI while freshman Maddy Cook finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season.
- Elms started with a run in the top of the first before RIT answered with two in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single by Cook.
- Elms scored three times in the second, before the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning on another Trumble RBI hit and four more in the third to build a 7-4 lead. Senior Jill Vorreiter brought home a run with a sacrifice fly before freshman Bailey Kehl knocked a two-run double during the decisive rally.
- Elms got one back in the fourth and tied the game, 7-7, in the top of the sixth, but an RBI hit by Vorreiter followed by a sacrifice fly by freshman Chloe McManus in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Tigers to victory.
- Freshman Lexi Pieri earned the complete game victory in her collegiate debut, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits while striking out three.
GAME 1 – Drew 11, RIT 0 (5 inn.)
- Drew plated one in the first inning and seven more in the second before adding three more in the fourth.
- Trumble and Cook each finished 1-for-2.
- Freshman Crystal Madore took the loss, allowing nine earned runs on 10 hits while striking out two in her collegiate debut.
