Softball splits two in Florida; defeats Albion 7-4, falls 1-0 to Kenyon

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The RIT softball team split a pair of games on the second day of action at the Gene Cusic Classic, Monday, falling to Kenyon, 1-0, before bouncing back for a 7-4 win over Albion.
 
GAME 2 – RIT 7, Albion 4
RIT junior Alexis Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI while senior Haley Czerwinski hit a pinch-hit, go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning to lead the Tigers over Albion.
  • Albion plated a run in the top of the first before RIT scored twice in the bottom half after senior Hannah Trumble came across on a wild pitch and Smith brought home first-year Lillian Rienstra with a sacrifice fly.
  • Albion answered with two runs on back-to-back hits in the second, before RIT retied the game, 3-3, on a RBI single by Trumble.
  • Albion retook a 4-3 in the third and held the Tigers scoreless until the decisive fifth inning. Smith knocked a one-out single to left center before first-year Bailey Kehl walked. Kehl made the second out of the inning after first-year Erin Ozminkowski hit a ground ball to shortstop, while Smith advanced to third. Junior Jill Vorreiter loaded the bases after reaching on an Albion infield fielding error before Czerwinski brought home Ozminkowski and Smith with a single to centerfield.
  • RIT plated two insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by first-year Chloe McManus and Smith's second RBI hit of the game.
  • First-year Lexi Pieri earned the relief victory, only allowing one hit over the final 3.1 innings. First-year starter Crystal Madore allowed three earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three in the no-decision. 
GAME 1 – Kenyon 1, RIT 0
Rienstra and first-year Kylie Aquaro each finished 2-for-3, but it was Kenyon bringing the lone run of the game across in the fifth to earn the victory.
  • Pieri only allowed three hits in four innings of work, while Madore allowed the lone run on three hits in three innings of relief to take the loss.

RIT takes on New Jersey City at 9:00 a.m. and Rockford at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 8) on the third day of play in Fort Meyers.
