ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The RIT baseball team opened Liberty League play with a pair of wins at Bard on Saturday; 9-8, 4-1.
In game one, RIT scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Bard restored its lead at 8-7 after five innings before the Tigers tied the game at 8-8 after six. RIT got the winning run in the top of the ninth to earn its first conference win, 9-8.
Game two's 4-1 victory was led by freshman right fielder
Sam Kulp, whose walk brought home the winning run for a 2-1 lead in the second before ending the game's scoring with a two-run double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1 – RIT 9, Bard 8
- Bard took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
- In the fourth inning, the Tigers scored seven capped by a pair of two-RBI singles each from senior third baseman Patrick Blackall and sophomore right fielder John Bagley. RIT got on the board after sophomore shortstop Randy Dodig walked with the bases loaded scoring senior left fielder Chris Reilly. Bagley got theTigers within one at 3-2 after scoring on a muffed throw. Senior first baseman Ian Libby's sacrifice fly scored junior catcher Kyle Poorman to tie the game at 3-3. Blackall scored freshman second baseman Christopher Colella and Dodig for a 5-3 lead and then Bagley scored sophomore designated hitter Nate Kistler and Blackall for a 7-3 lead.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Bard added three runs after Spencer Checkoway scored on an Alex Luscher groundout and then Jared Tobby's two-RBI single made it a 7-6 game after four.
- Bard took an 8-7 lead in the fifth. Checkoway scored after Michael Hannon grounded out, and then Jake Stacey's RBI-single scored Luscher.
- The Tigers tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth after a Bagley single scored Libby.
- The winning run came in the ninth inning after Blackall walked with the bases loaded, scoring Colella.
GAME 2 – RIT 4, Bard 1
- Bard took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after scoring on a throwing error.
- In the second, senior centerfielder Will Porter walked with the bases loaded scoring Reilly, and then Kulp's walk scored catcher Bagley.
- In the fourth, Kulp's double scored Porter and Dodig for the 4-1 final.
GAME NOTES
- It was the Liberty League opener for both teams with the Tigers out to a 2-0 start in conference play.
- In the first game, Bagley went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Blackall also had three RBI.
- Junior pitcher Alex Slotter picked up his second win after allowing three hits, two runs, and one walk with two strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings after relieving graduate student starter Collin Reformat, who went three and two-thirds innings in allowing four hits, five earned runs, and six walks with two strikeouts.
- Junior pitcher Peter Bossinas threw the final two outs to register a save.
- In the second game, four of RIT's seven hits were doubles from Libby, Reilly, Dodig and Kulp.
- Dodig led all hitters going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
- Senior pitcher Jon Opalewski earned his second win after going all seven innings and allowing two hits, one run, and three walks with seven strikeouts.
