ERIE, PA. – RIT sophomore forward
Emma Roland's third-period goal got the Tigers on the board, but it was Mercyhurst's five goals during the first two periods that allowed the Lakers to skate off with a 5-1 win in College Hockey America action, Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lakers took a 2-0 first-period lead after scoring 33 seconds into the opening period and also with 33 seconds left in the period. On the first goal, a Tiger defender lost her footing behind the net that helped develop the play for Mercyhurst as Sara Boucher moved out from the left side with a backhand shot to the far post moving left to right in front of the crease. On the second goal, MH converted a backhand pass from behind the net on the stick of Chantel Ste-Croix, who one-timed the puck past RIT freshman goaltender Sarah Coe.
- Mercyhurst got three late second-period goals in the final six minutes of the middle frame to take a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes. The Lakers scored with 14:02, 17:19 and 19:07 into the period with the latter marker being Ste-Croix's second of the game and on the power play.
- Roland got the Tigers on the board with the lone goal of the third period. Sophomore forward Lindsay Maloney sent a pass from behind the Laker net to the high slot area to Roland. After moving to her left and unable to shake a Laker defender, she reversed her field to the right side and once free unleashed a wrist shot inside the right post. Freshman defender Kylie Aquaro started the play by lugging the puck the length of the ice and pursuing the puck deep in the Laker end on the left side. Mercyhurst's attempt to clear the puck on the left wall was intercepted by sophomore defender Mia Tsilemos, who kept the puck in the zone and down low to Maloney behind the net.
GAME NOTES
- Junior goaltender Taylor Liotta was perfect in the third period with 20 saves and no goals allowed after relieving Coe.
- The Tigers finished with 31 blocks on the night and were led by senior defender Taylor Sims' five.
- Freshman defender Kyla Bear led the Tigers' offense with three shots on net.
- Roland's goal gave her a share of the team's goal lead with senior Abby Davies at seven.
- Maloney's assist gave her sole possession of second place in team scoring with 10 points.
