ROCHESTER, NY – RIT senior forward
Kevin Ryan scored 18 points and notched 10 rebounds in the Tigers 81-77 win over La Roche in the championship pf the 2022 Harold J. Brodie Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers got on the board first with a layup by junior guard Mark Osime in the first possession of the game.
- The two teams traded leads in early play, with neither team achieving more than a three-point lead during the first five minutes.
- A three-pointer by sophomore guard Brock Bowen with 14:50 left in the half started an 11-0 run that put RIT ahead, 23-15.
- The Redhawks narrowed the Tigers lead to four, but RIT responded with a six-point run to extend the lead to 10 with 7:06 left in the first half.
- Sophomore guard Chase Dickens hit a three-pointer as time expired in the first half to extend the Tigers lead to 47-24. The Tigers outscored the Redhawks 16-2 in the last 5:07 of the half.
- La Roche ate into RIT's lead in the second half, outscoring the Tigers 26-12 in the first 10 minutes to cut the Tigers lead to 59-50.
- A free throw by La Roche's Devon Darrell cut the lead to six, 64-58, with 6:46 left.
- A 6-0 run by the Tigers culminating in a dunk by junior forward Kenny Wilburn with 5:09 left increased the lead back to 70-58.
- La Roche responded with a 15-7 run, narrowing the RIT lead to four, 77-73, with 1:05 left.
- Two free throws by Dickens with 21 seconds left made it a two-possession game, 79-73.
- A pair of La Roche layups narrowed the Tiger lead to two, 79-77.
- Dickens would ice the game with two more made free throws with eight seconds left, 81-77.
GAME NOTES
- Ryan was named tournament MVP, while Wilburn was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
- RIT shot 50.8 from the floor on 31-of-61 shooting.
- The Tigers went 9-of-19 from beyond the arc and 10-of-16 from the free throw line.
- The Tigers out rebounded the Redhawks, 40-35.
- Ryan's 10 rebounds were a season-high for him.
- Bowen finished with 16 points.
- Dickens led the team with eight assists and was a key 5-of-6 from the free throw line, including going 4-for-4 in the final minute.
- In the tournament's consolation game, Hamilton defeated SUNY Canton, 76-51, for third place.
