ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT sophomore goaltender
Tommy Scarfone made a season-high 37 saves – including 21 in the third period – in the Tigers' 3-1 Atlantic Hockey victory over Sacred Heart, Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT scored 1:32 into the first period after sophomore forward Tanner Andrew took a short pass at the top of the right faceoff circle and skated on goal to beat Pioneer goaltender Luke Lush with a back-handed flip under the cross bar.
- Junior forward Cody Laskosky scored the lone goal of the second period, snapping a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle that found its way through Lush's pads with 10:19 on the clock.
- Sacred Heart got on the board with 5:17 left in regulation after Todd Goehring collected a short rebound and slipped a shot under Scarfone's pads.
- Tiger sophomore forward Carter Wilkie closed the night by flipping a puck three-quarters of the ice into an empty-net to beat the final horn by .3 seconds for the final goal.
GAME NOTES
- RIT (9-2-0, 8-1-0 Atlantic Hockey) is off to its winningest start in the Division I era.
- Scarfone finished two saves short of the career-high 39 he posted twice last season, including the 1-0 overtime victory over Sacred Heart in the opening game of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament Quarterfinal series on March 11.
- Scarfone set a career high for saves in a single period, eclipsing the 19 he made in the opening period of the Tigers' 5-3 setback to visiting Niagara last Jan. 21.
- Laskosky got back on track after having his nine-game point scoring streak to start the season broken in last Sunday's 3-2 victory at AIC.
- Wilkie notched his fourth multi-point game of the season.
- RIT improved to 7-2-0 when scoring first and is unbeaten in seven outings when holding opponents to three goals or less.
- RIT and Sacred Heart entered the night tied for first place in Atlantic Hockey.
- Head Coach Wayne Wilson moved into a tie for 43rd place in NCAA men's hockey history with his 418th career victory.
