GENEVA, NY -- The RIT women's tennis team had a strong showing at the 2021 Mary Hosking Invitational hosted by William Smith.
Of the eight participating colleges in the two-day event Saturday and Sunday, only RIT went undefeated in the opening round of singles play of four flights with
Jackie Drozd (Richboro, PA/The Hun School) advancing the furthest to the semifinal round.
Drozd was an 8-4 winner over Aliya Guzman from Nazareth in the first round in "A" Singles, and advanced to the semifinals after winning her quarterfinal match by a 5-2 score after Taylor Crain of Ithaca College retired. She was defeated 8-2 in the semifinals by Maggie Bonomo from William Smith.
Six other Tigers made it to the singles quarterfinals and included
Kirsten Auble (Portland, OR/Sunset) in "A" singles,
Gabby Donohue (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) and
Mackenzie Wade (Tyler, TX/Ouachita Baptist) in "B" Singles,
Abby Murray (Erie, PA/McDowell) and
Julia Smolowitz (Hudson, MA/Hudson) in "C" Singles, and
Julianne Ho (Scarsdale, NY/Edgemont) in "D" Singles. Five of the six Tiger quarterfinalists were eliminated by either the eventual champion or runner-up from their brackets.
In doubles action, RIT had two teams reach the consolation finals with the pairing of Donohue and Drozd taking the consolation "A" Doubles and the pairing of Auble and Smolowitz finishing runner-up in the consolation "B" Doubles.
Donohue and Drozd defeated Caitlyn Avery and Catherine Gamble of St. Lawrence by an 8-6 score in the consolation championship of the "A" Doubles. The RIT duo advanced to the finals after a walkover by Kayla Shenk and Lauren Rodriguez of Ithaca in the semifinals. Donohue and Drozd took a quarterfinal match by an 8-7 (7-4) score against Aliya Guzman and Claire Pullen of Nazareth.
Auble and Smolowitz dropped its consolation championship "B" Doubles match by 8-7 to Natalia Krol and Kylie Seiler of SUNY Geneseo after a strong 8-2 semifinal win against Erika Johnson and Abigail Rockwood, also from Geneseo. The RIT duo began consolation play with an 8-1 win over Nazareth's Gwen Burns and Ali Klee.
Also winning one round in consolation in "A" Doubles was the RIT duo of Murray and Wade, who took a quarterfinal consolation 8-4 win over Grace Klomp and Julianna Schulz of Geneseo.
In addition to Geneseo, Nazareth, St. Lawrence, Ithaca and host William Smith, other participating college's included Hamilton and Rochester.
