ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT senior outside hitter
Katie Hobler (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) totaled 21 kills and 11 digs to lead the Tigers to a 3-2 (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 15-13) victory over visiting Clarkson in the Liberty League women's volleyball opener for both squads.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RIT opened a 12-7 lead with a five-point run in the first set. Clarkson eventually pulled back within three points, 20-17, but the Tigers scored the final five points, including back-to-back kills by senior middle blocker Calista Gasper (Sarver, PA/Freeport), to close the first-set win.
- RIT pulled out to a 10-8 lead in the second, before riding a 5-1 run to a 15-9 lead. The Tigers extended their lead, 20-13, before Clarkson notched a 6-1 run to pull within two, 21-19. The Golden Knights made it a one-point score, 23-22, but back-to-back Hobler kills pushed the home team to a 2-0 lead.
- Trailing, 5-3, early in the third, RIT rode a 7-2 run to a 10-7 lead which grew to 15-9 after a service ace by senior outside hitter Taylor Higgins (Peru, NY/Peru). Clarkson fell into a 19-12 hole but responded with a 9-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. Hobler re-tied the score, 21-21, but Clarkson scored four of the final five points to earn the victory.
- RIT jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead in the fourth, before Clarkson scored five points to pull back within two, 10-8. The Tigers pulled out to a 15-10 lead, but the Golden Knights scored a 9-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. RIT battled back to knot the score, 21-21, but the visitors scored four of the final five points to force a deciding set.
- RIT broke a 4-4 tie with four-straight points, including a pair of Higgins kills, for an 8-4 lead. Clarkson answered with a 4-1 run to get back within one, 9-8. A Hobler kill finished a 3-1 Tiger run, but Clarkson scored the next two points to trail by one, 12-11. A Hobler kill followed by an assisted block by Tiger freshman middles Cat Vento (Coram, NY/Newfield) and Samantha Cox (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) yielded match point. Clarkson scored the next two points, but a kill by Vento sealed the RIT victory with one final kill.
MATCH NOTES
- Higgins finished with 14 kills and 12 digs.
- Freshman setter Sydney Neff (Delmar, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) was credited with a career-high 59 assists to go along with nine digs.
- Senior libero Kiana Walker (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) compiled a match-high 24 digs.
- Clarkson is the defending Liberty League Champion, having won seven of the last eight titles. RIT defeated Clarkson to win the 2018 title.
