ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior midfielder
Steph Darrell (East Norhtport, NY/St. Anthony's) scored with 6.2 seconds to play in regulation as the RIT (6-2) women's lacrosse team held on to beat the University of Rochester (2-3), 13-12 in non-conference action Friday afternoon.
RIT held a 32-31 shot advantage, and won the ground ball battle 20-18. The Tigers went 19-of-23 on clearing attempts and won 10-of-27 draw controls. Senior attack
Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) led RIT with five goals.
Olivia Africa (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Skylar Burlee (Churchville, NY/Churhcville-Chili) each tallied two goals and an assist, while Darrell chipped in three goals, including the game-winner. Senior goalie
Paulina Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) picked up the win in net for the Tigers, making 12 saves. Junior
McKenna Joint (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) had three ground balls and was one of three Tigers to cause two turnovers.
Emma Little led Rochester with three goals and four points. Kendra Jones and Zoe Sullivan each tallied a pair of goals for the Yellowjackets, while Carlie Bendavid took the loss in net, making 12 saves.
Rochester scored the first three goals of the game, taking a 3-0 lead on Little's first goal of the game. RIT came storming back, tallying six straight goals, taking a 6-3 lead on Fallone's goal with 7:59 to play in the first half.
Little scored the final two goals of the half for Rochester, cutting the RIT lead to 6-5 at halftime. The Yellowjackets scored the first two goals of the second half, taking a 7-6 lead on Sullivan's goal.
Goals from Darrell and
Baylee West (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) gave the Tigers an 8-7 lead. After a Rochester goal tied the score at 8-8, Fallone and Africa tallied consecutive goals for the Tigers, taking a 10-8 lead on Fallone's goal with 22:36 remaining.
Rochester scored three straight, taking an 11-10 lead on a Grace Crochiere goal with 10:36 to play.
Africa tied the score at 11-11 on her goal, and Burlee gave the Tigers a 12-11 lead with her goal with less than eight minutes to play in regulation. Jones tied the score at 12-12 on her goal with 4:33 to play.
Rochester turned the ball over with time running out in regulation, with Joint getting credit for the caused the turnover for RIT. The Tigers cleared the ball and Darrell fired home a shot with 6.2 seconds to play to give the Tigers the win.
RIT is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 16, at 4 p.m. against William Smith College at 4 p.m. from RIT's Turf Field.
