Baseball splits road twinbill at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – RIT splits a Liberty League doubleheader at Union, Sunday. The Tigers opened the day with a 6-2 victory before falling, 12-3, in game-two.

GAME 1 - RIT 6, Union 2

  • Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) finished 3-for-4, including a three-run homerun, while Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was 1-for-2 with a two-run homerun to lead the Tigers to the opening victory.
  • Union scored a run in the bottom of the first, before RIT answered with two in the second on Watson's shot over the left field fence. RIT took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) reached on an infield single before advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) followed with an RBI single up the middle.
  • The Dutchmen got one back with two outs in the fourth inning, but McNamara put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth with a homerun down the left field line that also brought home Reilly and  Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic), who had reached on back-to-back hits.
  • Capra also earned the complete-game victory on the mound, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs while striking out six. He also stranded 10 Union batters, including a bases-loaded jam with one out in the sixth inning.

GAME 2 – Union 12, RIT 3

  • Union built a 7-0 lead after plating three runs in the third and four more in the fourth.
  • RIT got on the board with a run in the fourth inning. Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) led off with a double to center and, after advancing to third on a wild pitch, scored on a ground-out by Watson.
  • Union made it a 9-1 game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and plated three more unanswered runs to put the game out of reach and clinch the split.
  • Kyle Poorman (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) brought two runs across in the ninth inning on a bases-loaded single.
