Women's lacrosse loses on the road at No. 19 William Smith

GENEVA, NY – The RIT (6-4, 2-4 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team was beaten 12-8 at No. 19 William Smith College (6-3, 6-2 Liberty League) Saturday afternoon.

Shots were 45-14 in favor of William Smith. The Herons won the ground ball battle, 32-12, while each team won 11 draw controls. The Tigers went 3-of-6 on free position attempts, and went 18-of-32 on clearing attempts.

Junior McKenna Joint (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and senior Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) each scored two goals for the Tigers. Senior Steph Darrell (East Norhtport, NY/St. Anthony's) finished with a goal and two assists, and senior Paulina Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) took the loss in net for RIT, making a career-high 22 saves.

Ellie Burns led William Smith with three goals and an assist. Maddie Montgomery added two goals, and Maddie Bamberger picked up the win in net for the Herons.

William Smith took an early lead on a Davis goal inside the first three minutes of the game. RIT came back with two straight goals from Olivia Africa (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and Rose Core (Syosset, NY/St. Anthony's) to take a 2-1 lead.

Montgomery and Sadie Mapstone gave the Herons a 3-2 lead on their goals, while Joint tied the game with her free position goal with 6:36 to play in the half.

The Herons answered with two straight goals, taking a 5-3 lead on Montgomery's second goal of the half with 1:46 to play to give the Herons a 5-3 halftime advantage.

Fallone scored the first of her two goals to open the second-half scoring, cutting the Herons lead to 5-4. William Smith scored three straight goals, taking an 8-4 lead on Payton McMahon's goal.

Fallone and Kayleigh Ground (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) scored back-to-back goals for the Tigers, cutting the Heron's lead to 8-6 on Ground's free position goal with 16:32 remaining. Burns made it 9-6, William Smith, with her goal with 14:54 to play, and Darrell converted a free position attempts that made it a two-goal deficit for the Tigers.

Goals from Williams, Burns and David increased the lead to 12-7, while Joint added a late goal to make it a 12-8 final.

RIT is scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 23, at the University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
