ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior attack
Dawson Tait (Ottawa, Ontario/Mother Teresa) scored six goals, and senior goalie
Walker Hare (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) made 16 saves as the No. 1 RIT (6-0, 2-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team beat No. 10 St. Lawrence University (4-2, 2-2 Liberty League) 15-5 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.
Shots were 45-31 in favor of RIT, winning the ground ball battle 43-28. The Tigers won 14-of-24 face-offs, were 1-for-2 on man-up, and went 21-of-25 on clearing attempts.
Tait led the Tigers with six goals and seven points.
Quinn Commandant (Rockwood, Ontario/The Kiski School) and
Ryan Rosenblum (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) each tallied two goals and an assist,
Larson Sundown (Basom, NY/Akron) handed out three assists and
Marley Angus (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) scored two goals.
Senior
Nick Montemorano (Victor, NY/Victor) won 14-of-21 draws and had 10 ground balls for RIT. Hare improved to 6-0 on the season, making 16 saves in net for the Tigers. RIT caused 13 turnovers led by Tait,
Alex Maruna (Medina, OH/St. Ignatius),
Brett Naylor (Clarence, NY/Clarence) each causing two turnovers.
Peter Koch led St. Lawrence with two goals, while Chris Jordan added a goal and an assist. William Helm took the loss in net for the Saints, making 15 saves.
RIT scored the first three goals of the game, leading 5-2 after the first quarter. Tait, Rosenblum and Commandant each scored in the opening minutes of the game to give the Tigers the early lead.
Jordan scored off an assist from Stew Hutchinson for the Saints that cut the RIT lead to 3-1, but goals from Angus and Rosenblum increased the RIT lead to 5-1. Hutchinson scored with 5:12 to play in the opening quarter to make it 5-2 RIT.
Angus opened the second-quarter scoring with his second tally of the game off an assist from Sundown to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Tait made it 7-2 with his goal off an assist from
Spencer Bell (Fairport, NY/Fairport).
After an Alex Mapstone goal cut the RIT lead to 7-3, goals from
Matt Wiechers (Waterloo, Ontario/The Kiski School) and
Andrew Powlin (Penfield, NY/Penfield) gave the Tigers a six-goal cushion. Peter Koch scored for the Saints inside the final three minutes of the half to make the score 9-4 RIT at halftime.
RIT blanked the Saints 4-0 in the third quarter, outscoring St. Lawrence 6-1 in the second half. Tait scored all four of the Tiger goals in the third quarter.
Koch broke a 23:47 scoring drought by the Saints with his goal with 8:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. Commandant and
John Mozrall (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford) each scored to make it a 15-5 final.
RIT returns to action on Wednesday, April 21, at 3 p.m. at Clarkson University.
