Women's hockey loses to Robert Morris in CHA Quarterfinal

Box Score ERIE, PA — The No. 6 RIT (1-15-0) women's hockey team had its 2020-21 season come to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Robert Morris University (14-7-1) in the quarterfinal of the College Hockey America Tournament Thursday afternoon.

"Hats off to Robert Morris on a fantastic game today," said first-year Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Celeste Brown. "This season has been a rollercoaster ride. I am proud of the way the team worked and played each game like it was their last."

Shots on goal were 50-17 in favor of the Colonials. The Tigers went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Robert Morris converted 1-of-4 power play opportunities.

Senior goaltender Jessi O'Leary (Woodstock, New Brunswick/Notre Dame Hounds) took the loss in net for RIT, making 46 saves. Maggie Burbridge led Robert Morris with two goals, and Molly Singewald got the win in net making 17 saves.

Robert Morris led 2-0 after the first period on goals from Burbridge and Ellie Marcovsky. Burbridge gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead at 8:44 when she deflected a shot over O'Leary's shoulder.  Marcovsky made it 2-0 Robert Morris on a one-timer at 13:18.

RIT had a chance late in the opening period when Stella Haberman (Golden Valley, Minn.) poked in a shot on target from close range.

Robert Morris extended its lead to 3-0 on Burbirdge's power play goal at 7:47 of the second period. Sophomore Christa Stefanopoulos (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Dawson College) fired a shot on target for the Tigers early in the period, while senior forward Jordan Marchese (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) had a chance on the Colonials doorstep with 17:56 to play in the period that was turned aside.

Marah Wagner added an empty-net goal at 18:14 of the third period to make it a 4-0 final.

Robert Morris advances to the CHA semifinal where the Colonials will face No. 2 Mercyhurst University Friday. 

"I couldn't be more grateful for this group of seniors in my first season," said Brown. "They put the team on their back and worked hard and showed tremendous resilience all season."
