Baseball earns 8-3 comeback victory at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – RIT senior Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 2-for 3 with a run scored and two RBI while junior third baseman Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) knocked a three-run double in the eighth to punctuate the Tigers' 8-3 comeback at St. John Fisher, Monday.

Trailing, 3-0, after five innings, RIT (3-2) plated one in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth to hand the Cardinals (6-1) their first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. John Fisher opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs the third inning and brought another unearned run across in the fifth.
  • Capra led off the sixth with a double to right field and eventually came around on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) to get the Tigers on the board.
  • RIT scored two with two outs in the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Nate Kistler (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) led off the inning with a single to right before freshman shortstop Randy Dodig (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) later walked and Blackall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Capra drew a walk to bring home Kistler before Dodig came home to tie the game, 3-3, after junior first baseman Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) was hit by a pitch.
  • The Tigers' decisive eighth started with a lead-off walk by senior left fielder Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) who advanced to third on two wild pitches as senior catcher Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) reached on a walk. Graduate student centerfielder Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) bunted McNamara home before Dodig loaded the bases with an infield single, setting up Blackall's bases-clearing double to the left field gap. Capra followed with a double to left field to plate Blackall to push the RIT lead to five.
  • Junior pitcher Jack Leahey (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) earned the victory, striking out nine batters while holding St. John Fisher to four hits and an unearned run over the final five innings.
  • Capra also started the game and held the Cardinals to four hits while only yielding two unearned runs in the no-decision.
