Baseball splits doubleheader with visiting Utica

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The RIT baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Utica, Sunday, falling, 10-7, in the opener before rebounding for an 11-0 game-two shutout.
 
In game one, RIT senior catcher Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI while junior left fielder Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) finished 2-for-6 with a run scored and two RBI.  
 
Game two saw junior pitcher Liam Barry (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) throw a complete-game shutout, scattering eight hits while striking out five Pioneers. Freshman second baseman Randy Dodig (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and a double while senior first baseman Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
 
GAME 1 – Utica 10, RIT 7
  • RIT held a 7-6 lead after three innings but Utica scored three in the seventh and another in the ninth while holding the Tigers scoreless over the final six innings.
  • In the first inning, Blackhall advance to third on a dropped fly ball by the Utica right fielder and came home on a Capra single to right. Capra stole second and later came around on a McNamara single to right.
  • Utica scored five runs in the topo of the second on three hits a walk and a pair of sacrifice flies, but RIT responded with four runs (with two outs) in the bottom half of the inning. Dodig laced a double down the right field line before back-to-back walks by junior third baseman Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) and Capra loaded the bases. Reilly knocked a two-run double to right-center before McNamara doubled home Reilly and Capra to put the Tigers back on top, 6-5.
  • Utica manufactured a two-out run to tie the game in the top of the third before RIT re-took a 7-6 lead on a Dodig RBI in the bottom half of the inning.
  • The game was scoreless until the Pioneers took a 9-7 lead in the seventh and put the game out of reach with a run in the top of the ninth.
  • RIT sophomore Peter Bossinas (Ossining, NY/Ossining) took the relief loss after allowing the first two runs of the seventh inning.
 
GAME 2 – RIT 11, Utica 0
  • RIT opened a 5-0 lead after three innings and brought six more runs around in the sixth to back Barry.
  • In the bottom of the first, Capra reached on a two-out, infield single and came around on a Reilly double to left.
  • RIT scored three in the second, kicked off by back-to-back, one-out singles by sophomore second baseman Nate Kistler (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) and senior catcher Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). Graduate student center fielder Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) walked to load the bases before an infield single by Dodig, a Blackall sacrifice fly and a Capra single pushed RIT to a 4-0 lead. Dodig also knocked a RBI single in the third for a 5-0 Tiger lead.
  • RIT's six-run sixth started with hits by McNamara and Kistler, followed by an RBI single by Watson and a Vertoske sacrifice fly. Dodig walked and Blackall loaded the bases with an infield single before back-to-back walks by Capra and Reilly plated two more. A two-run hit by junior right fielder Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) capped the five-run rally to put the game out of reach.

RIT plays a single game at St. John Fisher on Monday (March 22) at 3:00 p.m. before returning home next Sunday (March 28) to kick off Liberty League play opposite Skidmore with a doubleheader slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
