Baseball falls at Houghton in high-scoring 15-14 setback

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – RIT senior catcher Luke McNamara (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and three RBI while junior first baseman Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and two RBI, but it was host Houghton pulling out a 15-14 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning, Saturday.

RIT fell into an 8-1 hole after four innings and trailed, 13-8, after eighth before bringing six runs across in the ninth to take a 14-13 lead. However, Houghton plated two in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Houghton scored an unearned run in the first, but RIT responded in the second after junior left fielder Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood) got to second on a fielding error by the Crusader center fielder and eventually came around on a sacrifice fly by Libby.
  • Houghton scored three runs with two outs in the second inning, plated another run in the third and brought across another three runs with two outs in the fourth to build an early seven-run lead.
  •  RIT got things going with three runs in the fifth. Junior third baseman Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) led off with a single to center and advanced to second on a walk by senior designated hitter Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem). Libby brought Blackall around with a two-out single to right before McNamara plated Libby and Capra with a single to center.
  •  Houghton scored twice in the fifth but RIT got one back in the sixth on an RBI single by Reilly. The Crusaders scored a run in the sixth, but the Tigers answered with two in the top of the seventh, including a sac fly by Blackall.
  • Houghton scored single runs in the seventh and the eighth, sandwiched around an RIT run in the eighth on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Randy Dodig (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties).
  • Reilly knocked a one-out double to kick off the Tigers' ninth-inning rally and advanced to third on a passed ball after freshman center fielder Brooks Vertoske (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) walked. One batter later, sophomore shortstop Nate Kistler (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) drew the first of four-consecutive two-out Tiger walks, following Reilly and Vertoske home to make it a 13-11 score. Blackall tied the game with a two-run single to right before Reilly later drew a bases-loaded walk to push RIT to a one-run lead.
  •  Houghton scored the deciding runs with two outs on a Tiger throwing error to close the game.
