ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (1-9-0, 1-9-0 CHA) women's hockey team was beaten 3-0 by Syracuse University (3-6-1, 3-4-1 CHA) in CHA action from the Gene Polisseni Center Wednesday evening.
Shots on goal were 42-23 in favor of Syracuse. The Tigers took three penalties for six minutes, while the Orange were whistled for two penalties for four minutes. RIT went 0-for-1 on the power play and the Orange went 0-for-2 with the extra skater. Sophomore goaltender
Taylor Liotta (Mississauga, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) took the loss in net for the Tigers, making 39 saves. Allison Small picked up the win for Syracuse, making 23 saves. Jessica DiGirolamo scored two goals for Syracuse, and Abby Moloughney had two assists.
RIT applied solid pressure on the Syracuse defense in the first period, firing 11 shots on net. Freshman forward
Emma Roland (Williamsville, N.Y.) had a chance in the first period, while sophomore
Christa Stefanopoulos (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Dawson College) had three shots in a flurry in front of the Orange net. She finished with a team-best five shots on goal, and senior forward
Tori Haywood (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic) had four shots.
Moloughney gave the Orange a 1-0 lead on her goal at 6:19 of the second period on an assist from Shelby Calof. DiGirolamo made it 2-0 Syracuse with her goal at 0:15 of the second period, and added a second goal early in the third period to make it a 3-0 final.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Penn State University at 5 p.m.
