Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women’s Hockey falls in third to Mercyhurst, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT freshman goaltender Sarah Coe made 38 saves, but it was the Lakers who broke open a 1-1 third-period tie to take the contest, 3-1, Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • RIT and Mercyhurst played scoreless in the first two periods with the Lakers holding the edge in shots, 24-10. Sophomore forward Abby Davies' efforts kept Mercyhurst off the board after sweeping away a loose puck from an unguarded Tiger crease at the tail end of a Laker power play.
  • The Laker duo of sophomore forward Chantal Ste-Croix and graduate student forward Alexa Vasko connected on the game's first goal, 5:19, into the third period, after Vasko made a pass from the right side to Ste-Croix as she cut to the front of the net.
  • RIT responded to tie the game at 1-1, 2:09 later when Davies unleashed a quick shot from the high slot after receiving a perfect pass from freshman forward Kylie Aquaro from behind the Laker net. Junior forward Hana Solinger also earned an assist on the play after feeding Aquaro behind the net from the left side to start the play.
  • The Ste-Croix-Vasko duo struck again for the game winner with 8:35 left in the third. Sophomore defender Jersey Phillips' shot from the right point was redirected by Vasko. Coe made a left pad save on the redirection, but the loose puck sat in an open crease for a tap-in goal for Ste-Croix as she crahed the net.
  • Mercyhurst added an empty-net goal by Ste-Croix with 1:17 left in the third to wrap up the game's scoring to complete the hattrick.
GAME NOTES
  • Coe recorded a 95 percent save percentage after stopping 38 of 40 shots. It was her best outing of the season statistically in both goals-against average and save perecentage.
  • Sophomore defender Mia Tsilemos registered a team-best six blocks to give her 35 on the season.
  • Sophomore forward Lindsay Maloney recorded a team faceoff season-best 85.7 percent winning percentage for 10 or more faceoffs. Maloney entered the game at No. 12 in the nation with 137 faceoff wins and finished Friday's game with 12 wins on 14 attempts.
  • Davies' goal tied her for the team lead with four alongside sophomore forward Emma Roland
  • Solinger's assist gave her points in back-to-back games after scoring last weekend against No. 3 Minnesota.
