Softball opens season with wins over Delhi, 14-2, Elms, 25-0 (5 Inn.)

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The RIT softball team opened the 2020 campaign with a pair of victories during its first day at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Century Link Sports Complex.

RIT 14, DELHI 2
Senior shortstop Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) went 4 for 5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI while senior pitcher Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) threw a complete game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Tigers to the season-opening win.

  • RIT plated four runs in the fourth inning, including RBI singles by Guinan and freshman designated player Natalie Barrera (Worcester, MA/Doherty Memorial).
  • Delhi responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tigers brought across two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before scoring six in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
  • Junior second baseman Julia Vaillancourt (Braintree, MA/Braintree) led off the fifth with a single before stealing second and coming around on a Guinan triple. In the sixth, junior left fielder Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) brought sophomore catcher Jill Vorreiter (Fisherville, KY/Mercy Academy of Louisville) home with a double to right before Carroll came around on an error by the Delhi second baseman on a ball hit by Vaillancourt.
  • Eight consecutive Tigers reached to start the seventh inning, including Guinan who led off with a single for her fourth hit of the game.

RIT 25, ELMS (MA) 0 - 5 INN.
Freshman catcher Alexis Smith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and seven RBI while junior centerfielder Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) went 4 for 4 with three runs scored to lead the Tigers against Elms.

  • RIT brought 11 runs across in the first inning, including back-to-back two-run hits by sophomore right fielder Haley Czerwinski (East Amherst, NY/Clarence) and freshman left fielder Natalie Barrera (Worcester, MA/Doherty Memorial).
  • The Tigers scored four more runs in the second before plating eight more in the third, including a two-run double by Smith followed by a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Jennifer Vickery (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville).
  • Senior Melissa Gould (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) earned the win after only allowing one hit and striking out eight of the 16 batters she faced.

RIT (2-0) takes on Kenyon (OH) and Anna Maria (MA) on Tuesday at the Century Link Sports Complex. Game times are slated for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
