FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The RIT softball split a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, Wednesday, at North Collier Regional Park. The Tigers earned a 5-2 victory over Wilmington (OH) before falling, 7-5, to Alfred State for their first loss of the season.
RIT 5, WILMINGTON 2
Senior shortstop Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) went 1 for 3 with a three-run, third-inning home run while senior pitcher Torie Adler (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) threw a complete-game four-hitter to lead the Tigers over Wilmington.
- Junior left fielder Samm Carroll (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge) drew a walk to lead off the bottom and, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, later scored on an RBI double by freshman catcher Alexis Smith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot).
- Junior second baseman Julia Vaillancourt (Braintree, MA/Braintree) drew a one-out walk in the third, before Smith singled down the left field line to setup Guinan's home run over the left field fence.
- Wilmington got two back in the fifth inning on a two-out home run by sophomore shortstop Hayley Suchland.
- RIT put the game out of reach with a run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by freshman right fielder Natalie Barrera (Worcester, MA/Doherty Memorial).
ALFRED STATE 7, RIT 5
Senior designated player Erin Guinan (Geneva, NY/Geneva) finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI while junior third baseman Raquel Estrada (Middletown, NY/Middletown) knocked in two runs, but it was Alfred State combining for six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.
- RIT plated a run in the bottom of the first after freshman left fielder Natalie Barrera (Worcester, MA/Doherty Memorial) drew a lead-off walk and eventually came around on an RBI ground out by Guinan. Alfred State answered with an unearned run in the top of the second.
- The Pioneers brought four runs (two unearned) across in the fifth inning and scored two more unearned runs in the sixth to build a 7-1 lead.
- RIT bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run double by Estrada after freshman firstbaseman Alexis Smith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) reached on an error and advance to second on a single by freshman first baseman Alexis Smith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot).
- The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman leftfielder Natalie Barrera (Worcester, MA/Doherty Memorial) hit a one-out double and advanced to third on an infield single by sophomore center fielder Hannah Trumble (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon). Barrera came home on a sacrifice fly by Smith before Trumble came around on a single by Guinan.
