RIT Baseball falls to Beloit at RussMatt Central Florida Invitational

ORLANDO, FL – The RIT (2-4) baseball team lost to Beloit College 8-5, Monday, as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational during their annual Spring.
 
Sophomore Patrick Blackall (Hershey, PA/Hershey) added to an already strong beginning of the 2020 season with a good showing at the plate that included a home run, a double, and 2 RBI.
 
How it Happened:
  • Beloit scored three runs in the first inning. Garrison Ferone singled to drive in James Wicker who singled earlier in the inning. Matt O'Leary singled to drive in Ferone, and junior catcher Mitch Campbell singled. Beloit would hold a 3-0 lead until the fourth inning.
  • Beloit's Matt Crandall singled in the top of the fourth inning and would later score on a bunt by Wicker.
  • Blackall doubled to lead off the fourth inning for RI,T and would score later on a RBI single by junior catcher Kyle Watson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool).
  • Beloit responded with another run in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. O'Leary scored on a fielding error after getting on base with a single.
  • RIT came back with run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Daniel Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) got into scoring position with a double and was driven in on a single by sophomore Chris Reilly (Beachwood, OH/Beachwood).
  • Neither team scored in the sixth and seventh innings. Beloit would push ahead with 3 runs in the eighth to extend their lead to 8-2. O'Leary hit a triple with the bases loaded to drive in the 3 runs. Nick Schmidt and Ferone got on base after being hit by a pitch and Wicker singled before being driven in by O'Leary.
  • Reilly got into scoring position with a double in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Tigers. He reached third base on a single by sophomore Ian Libby (Melrose, MA/Malden Catholic) and would score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Nate Kistler (Lusby, MD/Patuxent).
  • After holding Beloit scoreless in the ninth, Blackall hit a 2 run home run in the to cut the Beloit lead to 8-5.
 At the Plate:
  • Blackall went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored.
  • O'Reilly went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Watson went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Capra hit a double and scored 2 runs.
 
On the Mound:
  • Capra started the game for the Tigers and struck out 8 batters in 5 innings.
  • Sophomore pitcher Jack Leahy struck out 7 batters in 3 innings of relief.
 
The Tigers will play another 3 games this week as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. They will next play Rhode Island College on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 6 pm.
