ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (0-1) women's lacrosse team was defeated 17-11 at home by No. 23 SUNY Geneseo (3-1) on a cold and windy RIT Turf Field Wednesday afternoon.
Shots were 44-35 in favor of SUNY Geneseo. The Knights won the ground ball battle, 22-19 and won 18-of-30 draw controls. Each team was 15-of-22 on clearing attempts, while the Tigers went 3-for-7 on free position attempts.
Senior
Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield) led RIT with seven goals.
Olivia Africa (Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with five points on two goals and three assists, while
McKenna Joint (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and
Krystyna Sterio (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each scored a goal. Maddi Dillabaugh led the Tigers with nine ground balls, four draw controls and caused three turnovers.
Rebekah Snitkoff (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde) got the start in net for RIT, making 13 saves in the first half.
Paulina Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) played the entire second half, making five saves.
Hannah Marafioti led SUNY Geneseo with 10 points on six goals and four assists. Tessa Doody finished with four goals, while Jacqui Thorsen, Nicole Voci and Laura Skrzypczyk each scored two goals for the Knights. Margaret Rosaschi picked up the win in net for Geneseo, making 10 saves.
RIT took a 2-0 lead early in the first half on goals from Sterio and Africa. Geneseo ran off three straight goals, taking a 3-2 lead on Skrzypczyk's first of the game with 16:19 to play in the first half. Fallone tied the game at 4-4 on her goal with 10:22 to play, but the Knights ran off three straight goals at the end of the half, including one from Marafioti with a minute to play to make it 8-6 Geneseo at halftime.
Goals from Doody and Marafioti to begin the second half ballooned the Knights lead to 10-6. Fallone scored two straight goals to pull the Tigers back to within 10-8. Geneseo would go on a 4-1 run, taking a 14-9 lead on a free position goal from Marafioti with 17:54 to play.
Geneseo outscored RIT 9-5 in the second half.
The Tigers return to action on Monday, March 9, when the Tigers play Montclair State in Clearwater, Florida beginning at 12:30 p.m.
